Chapter 5: What a waste of a lovely night
"I'm so sorry, I didn't see you there. I'm so clumsy. I uh-." I pointed at the door. "Yeah, bye." I rushed to the door, trying to get out of the cafeteria before I could embarrass myself even more. I felt Emma's eyes on me as I left. Way to go, Olivia. Getting mashed potatoes all over his shirt wasn't part of the plan.
I got into the bathroom and splashed some water on my face.
"You can do this, Liv." I said to my reflection on the mirror. "You can't go back now."
"Talking to yourself? If you need someone to talk to, I'm always here for you." Alex said, wait, what was Alex doing in the girls' bathroom? And how didn't I notice him getting in?
"What are you doing here?" Alex stiffled a laugh.
"Livvy, you're in the boys' bathroom." No way. How did I end up here? I was pretty sure this was the girls' bathroom.
"Ugh! Why is this happening to me?" Alex engulfed me in a hug. He always knew when I needed a hug. But I felt bad, I was going to hurt Connor's feelings and I was the one being comforted.
"Bad day?" I nodded, hugging him back. A guy, who I recognised as Noah's friend, got into the bathroom and gave us a weird look.
"I'm gonna go, I don't want to be late for class." Alex nodded, he knew that was a lie, we still had a few more minutes until lunch time was over.
"Okay, and I meant what I said earlier. I'm here if you need to talk." Alex smiled and I smiled back, turning around to leave before anyone else saw me, I didn't want people making assumptions about what I was doing in the boys' bathroom.
I wandered around the hallways until I heard the bell and went to class, I was early, of course.
I got a seat and took out the book that I had been reading for the past 3 days: Wonder by R.J. Palacio.
I read for a while until I felt a tap on my shoulder. I looked up and I saw Oli smiling.
"Hey, you left the cafeteria early, and you didn't look too happy, are you okay?" I nodded, smiling back at him.
Our history teacher entered the classroom, smiling. He was always in such a good mood, it was so irritating. No one could be that happy in high school. It was like those ads where the kid is really excited to go back to school.
"Good day, everyone. Are you ready to learn more things today?" I shook my head once I made sure he wasn't looking at me.
"What's it whith the long faces? Is it because it's Friday and you want to go home already?" I heard a few 'yes' and sighs at the back of the class. "Too bad, you can't ditch class now. So let's start." He started writing something on the board, I silently growled, it was going to take him forever to write whatever he was writing on the board.
When he finally put the chalk down, Connor got in the classroom.
"Connor, you're late. Take a seat and be quiet, please." Connor was wearing now his basketball shirt. I felt even worse knowing that it was my fault he was late
He did as our teacher said and took a seat, next to me, may I add.
"What are you doing?" He seemed taken aback by my question. "Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude."
He shrugged. "The other seats are taken."
Of course no one else wanted to be on the front row, except for a girl whose name I didn't remember, Oli and me. I didn't want to be on the front row either, but I wore glasses for a reason, and if I sat at the back of the class, it would be really hard for me to read whatever was written on the board, with that small and messy handwriting of our teacher. And Oli always sat next to me because he didn't want me to be alone.
Our teacher then made us open the book and turn to page 394.
I stared at the board in boredom as I listened to the lecture. I liked history, but this man was annoying. We all remained silent (except for a few whispers and giggles at the back) until the end of the lecture, then, our teacher looked at Connor and smiled.
"I think you're better off on the front row. So for now on you'll be seating there."
OH, COME ON!
My history teacher looked at me and raised his eyebrows.
Oh my, did I say that out loud?
"Yes, you did. Do you have a problem with that Mrs. Williams?" I shook my head, biting my bottom lip before I could say something I'd end up regretting.
"Okay, see you on Monday." And with that he left, before Connor could even protest.
"Uh, Connor, do you remember my address?" He looked at me, his face not showing any emotion, except maybe annoyance and he nodded. "I'm sorry about what happened at the cafeteria." I said sincerely. I was going to apologize for snapping like that but I didn't have an excuse for that.
"It's fine, really. See you tomorrow?" He asked with a small smile.
"Yeah." I smiled back. I turned around and saw Oli with a playful smirk on his face and wiggling his eyebrows.
"Someone's got a date" He said in a singing voice.
"Shut up, we're just going to work on a project." Oli smirked again and extended his arm so I could take it.
"Shall we go, Mrs. Williams?" He asked with a weird accent.
"Of course, Mr. Ross." I replied with a goofy smile.

After school I went home with Mia and Emma.
I was going to have a movie night with my friends and after that we were going to get dinner. Mia and Emma were going to babysit Sam, Emma's baby brother.
I went up to my room looking for some nice and comfy clothes to wear. I picked a pair of leggings and took a shirt from my brother's bedroom. I was about to get my shoes off when I heard something scratching my door. I opened my door and saw my 3-year-old Husky.
"Hey, Scottie." I patted him and he lied down, silently asking me to rub his tummy. "Who's a good boy?" I asked in a high-pitched voice. I couldn't help it. I looked up, Liam was standing there with a smirk on his face.
"Woah, how did you get in?" He shrugged and sat on the edge of my bed. "Are you a ninja?" He laughed, patting Scott.
"Your sister let me in." He sat on my bed and took off his shoes.
"Why is she still here? She said she was going to babysit our cousin." Liam shrugged, lying down on my bed. I was going to protest but Emma came into my room with Sam.
"Hey, Mia and I are going out and since you're going to have a movie night you can take care of him." I looked at my cousin, waiting for her to tell me it was a joke. We only had a few months until our movie nights were over, in a few month we would have our finals and we'd be too busy to hang out.
"Are you kidding me? Aunt Clare is paying you to babysit Sam. It's not that hard to take care of a baby." Emma shook her head and sat Sammy on my bed.
"That's why I need you to take care of him." I opened my mouth to reply but she didn't let me. "Thank you, bye!" She hurried down the stairs, leaving me with Sam and Liam (and Scott).
"Ugh! I swear I hate her sometimes." Sam made a cute baby noise and I sighed. "And why are you here? You know our movie night starts at 7 pm right?" Liam nodded.
"Yeah, but if I miss training coach will be so mad, so maybe we can watch a movie before I go." I smiled, he was so sweet.
"Okay. We're gonna watch La La Land." Liam scoffed and I hit his arm. "It's a good movie!"
"Whatever you say, Liv." I searched the movie on Netflix and I sighed happily. Everything was great until the song "Another Day Of Sun" ended, that's when we noticed the horrible smell coming from the baby that was sitting on my lap.
