As a kid, Davey never understood why he always got in trouble for the words scrawled in beautiful cursive on his wrist.
Shit, sorry!
After a teacher would scold him for the words that were written, he remembered his mother having to visit the school and explain.
Explain what? He wasn't quite sure. His older sister Sarah told him that the words written on his skin were the first words his soulmate would say to him. But he never knew why it was so bad if it was what his soulmate said.
When highschool came around, Davey was beyond frustrated with the words written on him. He could've gotten anything else, but now whenever someone discovers the writing they burst into laughter. Over the years, he learned to instinctively hide his wrist from people whenever they passed by.
"It's so annoying, Sarah!" Davey groaned, leaning back in his bed while his sister stifled her laughter.
"Yeah it's," She paused, giggling. "It's not fun, is it?"
Sarah hadn't met her soulmate yet either, but at least the words on her wrist weren't something she had to hide.
Oh, you're Davey's older sister?
"Of all the things they could've said, they had to swear?!"
Sarah shrugged. "It all depends on how you meet. For all you know, their swearing could be perfectly justifiable."
Davey stopped, thinking for a moment. "I wonder what's written on them..."
"Probably you being a total dweeb."
"Sarah!"
Sarah burst out in laughter, covering her mouth with her hand.
Two weeks had passed, and Davey had spent multiple hours worrying about what he'd said that would be written on his soulmate forever.
Pushing through the cafe doors, going through his order in his head before he got to the counter. He had gone here every morning for nearly a year, but he almost always stumbled over his words.
Today was no different.
Leaving the cafe, steaming coffee in hand, he felt a buzz from his pocket.
Sarah Jacobs
Hey, I'm going out with friends tonight you have to watch Les
Davey sighed, typing out a response with his free hand.
David Jacobs
Alright, but remember you have to watch him saturday
As he pressed send, he collided with something - no, someone - in front of him. Before he could apologize, he watched as the nearly full can of paint the stranger had been holding tip and pour all over the two of them. The stranger in front of him dropped his paint can in surprise, causing sky blue paint to pool onto the concrete.
"Shit! Sorry-" Davey froze at the words, looking at the boy in shock. Glancing at his wrist, he felt his heart rate quicken.
"It's you." Davey's words were barely audible, but in an instant, the two of them stood stock still.
Finally, the paint fully registered in Davey's mind and he staggered backwards.
"Oh- Sorry, I- god dammit." He cursed under his breath, looking down at his now ruined shirt. You've only just met your soulmate and you already spilled his paint everywhere, nice job, Davey.
"Oh god, I'm so sorry, uh- shit, that doesn't look like it'll come out easily, sorry." The man grew frantic, not bothering to pick up the paint can as he fussed over Davey.
"I should probably get home to change." Davey forced a smile. At least his coffee wasn't ruined.
Davey walked past the stranger, glad to know that his phone hadn't been caught in the mess of paint.
"Wait!" Davey spun around at his voice. "Lemme give you my phone number, we are soulmates anyway."
Davey nodded, watching him write his number across his arm in large messy numbers.
"Thanks." Davey muttered, staring at the digits that covered his entire forearm.
"The name's Jack, by the way." The man - Jack - grinned.
"David."
"Nice to meet you, Davey." He waved, turning and walking off before Davey could say anything more.
Davey walked home with a smile on his face, despite the paint that had now dried and left him with a stiff, uncomfortable top that he would likely never be able to use again.
When he got inside, Sarah immediately spotted him, her jaw dropping.
"What the hell happened to you?"
"I met my soulmate." Davey couldn't wipe the smile off of his face.
"And?"
"His name's Jack and," Davey gestured to his paint covered shirt "He paints, I think."
