I used the map on the back of my class schedule to find the councilor's office. I knocked on the frosted glass door and was instantly prompted to come in.
I entered the rather messy office. A man just a few years older than I was sat behind the desk. He wore a dark purple suit with a flowery tie and thick reading glasses. His hair was an extraordinary color of silver grey despite his young age. He smiled at me.
"I was wondering when you'd show up." He said, leaping to his feet. I noticed that he was very tall, with an almost adolescent awkwardness about him.
"Did Mr. Smith call you?" I asked as he walked around me.
"No, he didn't."
"Listen, I'm sorry I hit Leela-"
"Leela?" He frowned at me. "Oh, didn't worry about that. You're Katana Wilder, aren't you?"
"Yes. And you are...?"
"Logan."
"You the councilor?"
He nodded. "Yes, yes. During the day, yes. At night I work for Master Kontrol."
I stiffed, ready to fight. "Master Kontrol? What do you do for them?"
"I'm a scientist. Have been for a long time. didn't worry. I'm not loyal to them. I have a more...ancient loyalty."
"What?"
"I research time travel." He climbed over his desk and dropped himself into his chair. "Please, have a seat."
I sat down.
"So, you work for Master Kontrol." I said. "But you're loyal to someone else. Who?"
"Curious, aren't you?" Logan asked.
"It's what keeps me alive. Now, tell me who you work for."
"Myself, mostly. But I have important information for you. Master Kontrol is building a weapon."
I raised an eyebrow. "Gee, a weapons manufacturer making a weapon. Whatever shall we do?"
"This is a special weapon. It's called the Skyfall Device."
"That's a dumb name. What's it do?"
He frowned at me. "You really think it's a dumb name?"
"Get on with it." I said.
"Alright, alright. It's supposed to be able act as a...genetic modifier. You put in a DNA sample and it modifies other organisms to match it."
"Say what now?"
He leaned forward. "Think of it as a giant stencil maker. Except instead of marking paper, we're marking genetic codes. Skyfall takes the stencil you put in and applies it to every piece of paper you choose. It could do this on a global scale."
I stared at him. "What?"
"Say we took your modified DNA, the stuff that makes you a Paragon, and put it into the machine. We set the machine to target all humans with type AB blood. Then we broadcast it out. It-"
"-Changes everyone into someone like me." I interrupted. "Someone with powers."
Logan nodded. "You understand why it could be a problem. We could also use it to broadcast viruses or harmful mutations. It's dangerous."
"I do. But wait, how does it broadcast?"
"What's the one thing in the universe that never changes?"
