Prologue
"Alicia Elizabeth Cooper, you are the best thing that.....Damn! I can't do this. I had this whole goddamn speech planned and practiced 27 times. But now, looking at you I can't remember a word. You've rendered me speechless, like you always do. So I'm just going to skip ahead and say that I love you more than life itself. Alicia Elizabeth Cooper, will you please do the honour of marrying me?"
He is on his knees, looking handsome as always. Only this time, his usual jeans and t-shirt are replaced with a white shirt, tucked in black trousers. He is smiling nervously and biting his lower lip. He looks at me with his beautiful green eyes, waiting for an answer, holding up a red velvet box where sat a halo sapphire diamond ring.
Since we have been together for so long, the proposal was not much of a surprise. Yet, I find myself struggling for an answer.
How can you be sure if you love a person enough to spend the rest of your life being theirs?
I remember him saying once, "If you love someone, the only thing left to do is marry them, but you need to be sure that you truly and whole heartedly love them, and not just the idea of loving them."
"I'm sorry, but I have to think about it"

As I drive back home, I can't stop thinking about what happened back there: The proposal, the beautiful ring, his mesmerizing smile, my answer, the hurt in his eyes, and how I am the one who made them that way. I turn on the radio to clear my head. But as the familiar words fill the car, I wish that I hadn't.
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
Little darling, it's been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it's been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
And I say it's all right
This song reminded me of all our hugs, our stolen kisses, our late night phone calls, our bickering, our fights, our making up, his lame attempt at jokes, and me laughing at them anyway. But most of all how he taught me to love.
A tear streams down my face.
