By now I'd learned that the publishing world moves both incredibly slowly and then at times incredibly swiftly.
The wait times feel like an absolute eternity. Waiting for agents to reply. Waiting for publishers to decide. Waiting is simply part of the job description, as is cultivating patience, because everyone is incredibly busy and no likes to be hounded. That, of course, doesn't make it any easier when you're waiting on a verdict that may or may not change your life. :)
So I sat on my hands for three months, and although I may have typed out a couple of chasing-up type emails, I thankfully deleted them before hitting send.
Four months later In February 2012, I heard back by email.
'Thank you for your patience, your manuscript is still under consideration.'
It was a crumb of hope! I was elated! And then I was frustrated! I just really , really wanted to know which way this thing was going to go.
Cue more hand wringing and wine drinking, and hanging out on the Authonomy forums with my new buddies on the chick-lit boards. I consider myself really lucky to have made some fabulous friends there, like-minded people who share my love of reading and writing women's fiction. I've since met up with several of them for far too much vino, and I'm proud to death of their successes. Of all of the discoveries I've made along the way over the last few years, I cherish the new friendships I've made most of all. My writing group have become amongst my closest friends, I thank my lucky stars for them.
Anyway, I digress, mostly to gloss over the next three months of, you know, more waiting.
And then, one warm May morning when I was sloth-tastically still in my PJ's and watching This Morning with my laptop balanced on my knees (inappropriate mini-crush on Philip Schofield. Don't judge me) an email slid into my inbox from HarperCollins. I almost choked on my hobnob!
Was I brave enough to even click it open?
