Chapter 5 - Distraction

I unlock the door to stop suspicion. I started to sing the song for Veronica. Remembering every note made me sing it fluently and easily. It was so easy to sing to Veronica. She was my queen before. I wouldn't mind doing this everyday. As I finish she speaks up.
"T-Toby... you sound like Archie. He's got talent and y-you pulled it off." Veronica stutters out.
"Uh thanks." I say. My voice hasn't changed. I know that.
"Sounds good Tobias. Was that one that you was writing last week?" Officer Parker smiles.
"No. Veronica's ex." I rub the back of my neck. "She uh... wanted me to sing it."
"Oh. Can I talk to you Officer Michaels?" Parker says. He was my one of my best friends (as well as jug, though he didn't like when Betty fell for D'Angelo). He knew everything.
"Of course officer." I say.
"D'Angelo... what's hanging?" I say.
"Don't what's hanging me dude." He rolls his eyes. "You aren't again are you dude?"
"Doing what?" I shrug. He shuts Veronica's door.
"You're an idiot, Archie Andrews." He rolls his eyes.
"How am I an idiot?" I sigh.
"Your falling for her Archie, and making it obvious your not Toby, you're Archie." D'Angelo says.
"Well Danny, I don't want to live a lie."
"You're gonna get fired. Grow up." He sighs. "Have you kissed her?"
"No." I say, gulping.
"Archie, you're such a bad liar. How many times?" He says, sternly.
"None." I lie.
"Liar. Cmon tell me. I'm not gonna get my bestie done."
"Twice." I say.
"Fuck. You can't do this!" He shouts.
"Shh dude." I look and suddenly we have a lot of attention because Danny shouted.
"She can't find out, you do realise that Arch. What if she found out." Danny says.
"No. she's still blind to it."
"How's the father been?" He asks.
"A dick bro."

"Archie Andrews, Hiram Lodge, Hiram Lodge, Archie Andrews." An officer says.
"I know who the ginger bastard is." He sighs. "He dates my daughter."
"Oh wow is this true, officer?" My boss says.
"Yes. Veronica isn't anything like Hiram. So why is Hiram in?"
"Same reason... fraud, bankruptcy, thieving and now something to do with the serpents." Officer Parker says, leaning against a wall.
"Thank you, D'Angelo." I say. "Any words before we whisk you off to prison, Mr Lodge or should I say prisoner number 89765."
"I hope you and your ginger self die. Same for your ginger trampy mom and your stupid ugly dad."
"Don't you dare fucking say anything about my—" I get cut off by my boss.
"That's unnecessary language Archibald, as for you Hiram that's assault to an officer. You got extra time." He says.
"Ergh great." He sighs.
"D'Angelo take Hiram to the cell. Archie, we gotta talk." The boss says.
"You gotta break up with Veronica. Dating a lodge on our department is gonna look bad." My boss says.
"Fire me if you want. Veronica is the love of my life." I fight.
"I can't do that. You're one of the best, Archibald." The boss says. "But when you and Ronnie break up—"
"If." I cut him off.
"Fine if you and Ronnie break up and she ends up being a criminal like her dad, which is likely, then you can't reveal your identity to her." The boss says.
"Deal." I sigh. "If she's a criminal."
"When you break up, don't give her another chance." The boss says. I would give Ronnie unlimited chances but oh well.
It was Ronnie that wouldn't let me in after we broke up. I called her loads. She even called sheriff Keller on me once for calling her 17 times but he said it wasn't enough times to be harassment but still. Why would she call the sheriff? It's way too far. It was maybe a little harassment but she wouldn't talk to me at all. It was the next week she got with reggie. He teased me with it loads, leading him to several black eyes. She was so sad for the week. She burst out crying in the middle of lesson. We was together almost a year. I skived a lot and mom and dad got worried for my studies. They dragged me out of Riverdale High and put me in a private school for a while but I managed to go back to Riverdale and change back my lacrosse stick to a football. I never liked what reggie did. He cheated on Ronnie lots. I tried telling her but she says I was just jealous and trying to make her depressed like me. Cassie was a girl I met who made me happy. We just don't have the chemistry and I was missing Veronica. Cassie used to watch me play lacrosse. She was a supportive girlfriend and her new boyfriend Kyle is pretty lucky. I wrote songs about my friendship with Cassie before. Because I'm still close to Cassie and now Kyle, I helped her happiness along. Kyle got in touch with me. He made me make a cd with my voice saying a little message and then singing a song that Kyle requested me to sing. Then at the end I had to words.
"Now my best friend, your boyfriend, Kyle needs to say..."
then he proposed. I was super excited for Cassie. She was 2 years older than me. Proposed to at 18.

That night, walking in my house, I walk to my bedroom.
I open up Skype and call Cassie. I look at my messages. 10 today telling me to ring her.
She answers after 2 rings.
"Archibald!" She says. She has her cat, Scraggles on her lap, stroking her fur.
"Hello Archie." Kyle says, sitting on the bed behind Cassie.
"So what's the urgency Cass?" I laugh.
She looks at Kyle.
"I'm pregnant!" She exclaims.
"No way!" I say, my face laced with genuine excitement.
"Yes way!" She says. "So you arch... how is things with Veronica?"
"I sang to her today." I say, looking down.
Cassie excited screams and Kyle laughs.
"We are coming down on the 1:30AM flight though, I can't wait to see you Archie it's overdue." Cassie says.
"I can't wait to see you too Cassie." I smile.
"What time will you be here?"
"7AM your time. Can you pick us up before work?" Cassie says.
"Yes. Of course." I say.
I get a call. It's not my work phone. It was the number I had from high school. It was a really old number. Different phone obviously. I recognise the number. I get confused. Prison phone 5.
"Prison is calling. Not even my work phone." I say.
"How long have you had the number." Cassie says.
"Since high school." I shrug.
"What if it's Ronnie." She says.
"Shh then."
I pick up and put her on loud speaker.
"Hey, is this Archie?" She says, sounding like she's being crying.
"Yes, who's this?" I say, putting a deeper voice on like my balls suddenly dropped or something.
"It's Veronica." She sniffs. "I love you."
"Where did this come from?" I say in my deep voice.
"I can't explain right now Archie everything is too messed up. I'm not with reggie now. I can't tell you everything for safe guarding right now. I love you. But I am distracting myself from you right now with someone else but every time I kiss him, arch, I'm comparing him to you. I hope I can call you tomorrow night. I want you again. I love you." She sobs
