"Yeah Naddie! Whoo!" My friends cheer as I make my way back to join them. Zach gives me a high-five.
Hero, I'm a hero. Obviously it's a big deal.
Boomer checks his watch. "Okay, let's break for lunch. We'll start up again after, starting with you." He points to Will who looks petrified.
"I'm telling ya, Boomer's really going to regret making me a sidekick," Zach rants as we head to the cafeteria. "One day, it'll be dark, he'll drop his keys, and I won't glow to help him."
Suddenly, Boomer stands before us, blocking our path. "Do you have a problem with me freshman?" he demands.
Now Zach is startled. "Uh, um, n-no..."
"No what?"
"No sir!"
Boomer chuckles and then disappears altogether, revealing the identity-shifting kid. "I'm just messing with you sidekick."
"You're not supposed to use your powers outside the school gym!" Ethan defends Zach. I give my friend a pat on the shoulder and we find a table. While everyone else buys lunch, I pull my paper bag-packed lunch from my bag.
"Aww, Naddie packed a lunch!" says Zach. I stick my tongue out at him.
"Okay am I going crazy or is that guy really staring at me?" Will asks. We all look to the table behind us to see the grumpy guy from earlier in the hall scowling at Will's back.
"He's definitely staring at you," says Magenta.
"Dude!" says Zach suddenly in realization. "I got it! I know why he seemed so familiar: dude, that's Warren Peace."
"That's Warren Peace?" cries Layla.
"The Warren Peace?" I also exclaim. "No way!"
"Yes way," insists Zach.
"Wait, who?" asks Will, completely clueless.
"His mom's a hero and his dad's a villain, right?" says Layla. "Baron Battle?"
"Okay and where do I come in?" Still clueless.
"Your dad busted his dad," says Zach not-so-lightly. "And put him in jail."
"A quadruple life sentence," adds Ethan.
"No chance of parole until after his third life," adds Magenta.
"Great," sighs Will. "My first day at Sky High, and I already have an archenemy. And it's only noon!"
I notice that, like earlier in the hall, everyone leaves Warren alone. He's sitting by himself at the end of a completely empty table reading a book. Or at least he was before deciding to stare down Will. Honestly, I felt kind of bad for him, with his dad in jail and everyone avoiding him.
"Poor guy," I mumbled. "Do you think he's lonely over there all by himself?"
Zach scoffs. "What is your power again? Niceness? Naddie, he's not lonely, everyone leaves him alone, and for good reason. I mean look at him, he looks like he's going to murder Will right here and now."
"Thanks," mumbles Will.
"He in our year?" I ask.
"He wasn't at orientation," Magenta reminds me.
"I heard he was held back a year," Layla tells us. "So he's a year older than us but in the same grade."
"Hero or sidekick?" asks Will.
"I'm not sure. Not sure what his power is."
"You could go ask him," I tease and Will makes a face back.
After lunch we're heading back to the gym when we pass by Gwen and Julia, Will and Gwen almost colliding. It's obvious to see that Will is quite smitten by her.
She chats with him, and basically ignores us. She seemed friendly when she first introduced herself at the start of the day, but now she seems kind of fake to be honest, acting like she cares when she really doesn't. Will's too love-struck to see this though.
Having had enough of Gwen I continue on, Zach, Layla, Ethan, and Magenta following. As we round the corner I almost run head-first into someone coming from the other way, nearly bumping my nose on their chest.
The person is tall and leather-clad, and when I look up I find myself staring up into the dark, mysterious, handsome face of Warren Peace. Wait, handsome? Okay yes this is true, even when he's scowling.
"Uh..." His intimidating glare leaves me speechless, much like earlier this morning, but I finally manage to squeak out another 'sorry', before he pushes past without so much as a word. He doesn't make it very far before he almost collides again, this time with Will. Looks like we might be making a habit out of this.
I find myself staring after Warren as he walks away. I'm curious. Okay so maybe he's a little rude and thinks Will's his enemy, and maybe his dad's a super villain but that doesn't make him one. Why do I find myself thinking there's more to him than meets the eye?
