"You have a choice."
Lyra glanced at Capricorn in surprise, barely noticing that she had spoken. They had walked out in silence, and she had expected the rest of the trip to be the same way.
"You have a choice," Capricorn repeated, "you can choose to accept this apprenticeship, or you can choose to reject it. The choice is yours."
Lyra stared. "I have a choice."
Capricorn nodded solemnly. "I know that I was not the one you wished for."
Lyra kicked a pebble off of the path. "What, are you offended?"
"I think that, after thousands of years of being ignored by my fellow horoscopes and the entire realm, one more rejection from one more person wouldn't hurt too much."
Lyra was surprised. Capricorn hadn't struck her as the kind of person to have a sense of humor, however dry it was.
"However," Capricorn continued, "it is a choice that comes with serious consequences. Libra will explain later once we reach our destination."
"Our destination?"
Capricorn nodded. "We'll be there shortly. "
"How soon?"
"It is right over the bridge."
"What bridge?"
Capricorn pointed. Lyra followed her gesture . "Oh. That bridge,"
Ahead of them stood a white marble bridge. It looked oddly out of place, something grand and majestic among worn cobblestone paths and old houses.
"It is a bridge between realms," Capricorn explained.
"Realms?" Lyra asked, watching as Aries led his apprentice onto the bridge, closely followed by Taurus with his apprentice. Aries walked across the bridge, reached the edge, and promptly disappeared.
"Realms," Capricorn repeated, ignoring Lyra as she gaped at the sight of horoscopes and apprentices disappearing into thin air one by one.
"Realms. Right. And what realm are we going to?"
"Tsaro. Your new home."
. . .
