Unedited Chapter 3
Empty.
Thats what she felt. Like she lost the ability to think and reason. She couldn't move and her skin was on fire. But then everything came crashing down on her. The pounding in her head, the itch on the skin of her legs and arms, but more specifically the sharp pain in her shoulder. And even though her eyelids felt like a ton of weights were pulling them down, she opened them.
There was no blinding headlight above her like she had expected there to be, but it was quite dark. She could tell that she was in the same room as before. The emptiness had not gone yet, but this time she could think. At Least a little.
She closed her eyes. What could she do to get out? Something was wrong with this place, her guts told her. But what? Maybe it was the fact that people were trying to convince her that everything was normal when clearly it wasn't. The building was oddly closeted, that she had figured out.
The door of her room opened to reveal Dr. Malik and another man who looked tall and buff, but with a kind face. He wore the same suit as the men who shot Aurora were wearing, and this made her breath hitch.
"Aurora, I would like you to meet Liam, he is going to be your guard and is going to be helping you with anything that you need".
Liam looked at Aurora and gave her a curt nod. The rim of metallic light around his chocolate brown iris looked like an illusion of the lighting in the room, but the constant shift in its size made it obvious that it was real.
Zayn did the usual check up of her breathing, pulse and heart ratings. While she sat still cautiously watching Liam, all he did was stare around the room as if searching for something. He tapped the tables, the night stand, and even fiddled with the IV tubes. The impression he made on her was not what she had had expected him to make. With his kind doe eyes as well as his friendly face, he didn't look like the kind of person to be scared of. But that very rim of light gave him a suspicious look.
By the time Zayn was done checking Aurora up, Liam was finished with his investigation too. They gave each other a quick glance, before Zayn stood up and said, "You are doing alright. You have shown improvement in your health and you look more fresh than when I saw you the last time. If you just pay little more attention to your diet, you will be looking like a normal person very soon".
Looking like a normal person would be an understatement if there was no way to look at yourself. It was evident the Zayn was trying to get her as comfortable as possible, but this effort wasn't enough.
Liam was already out of the door. Zayn just stared at her and quickly reached for his pocket and tossed something on the bed. Before Aurora could ask what it was, he was already out. She reached for the object and saw what looked like a mobile chip. She didn't know how she knew what a mobile chip looked like, but that is the first thing that came to her mind upon seeing it.
The chip was small, enough to fit in her palm, which was no surprise. But what shocked her was, its weight. It was heavier than it looked, as if the gravity was acting on the chip much more than it was on the surrounding objects.
Aurora got to work. She knew that this chip could give her information. But where to insert it. She didn't know of a slot where she could insert and there was no screen to show her what she wanted to see.
The heart monitor. She thought. It must have a USB slot or an insert option somewhere behind it. The monitor wasn't connected to her as the oximeter did its work, but it was switched on.
Examining the ports and tubes, she concluded that there was no way she could insert the chip into the monitor. Disappointed, she slumped down on the bed, trying to figure the chip out. Suddenly Liam's strange behavior struck her. He must have been searching for a slot himself and might have known about this chip. No wonder Zayn was being so secretive.
Aurora began a search of her own. If Liam was suspicious then there surely had to be something important in her room, whether it was a chip port or a way out if the building itself.
She went up to her cabinet, with anything hardly in it other than a few pill bottles and a pair of hospital gowns. Removing the items further she looked for a port but was left disappointed again when she saw that there was no way for her to find any information.
What caught her attention was the chip rotating in its place like a compass, trying to find its direction. But the chip was not a compass, was it? She gave it a little tap, and it flew towards the back of her cabinet like it was attracted by a strong magnetic force. The cabinet door closed shut and a thin horizontal beam started to emit from a hole at the centre of the door and scanned her.
It moved up and down for a few seconds, and then suddenly stopped. A glossy liquid started to drip down from the top of the cabinet, covering the whole door. It was shiny and reflective.
A mirror.
She saw the reflection of an odd looking figure. Rough hair sticking out at odd angles, pale grey skin with cuts and purple bruises.
Sunken eyes, with bags and dark circles underneath. She looked like she had malnutrition, a ghost straight out of a horror movie.
But that didn't grab her attention as much as the series of bruises on her skin did. Of course it was ghostly, but the amount of purple spots covering her skin made her look like she just came out of a rainbow blast. Bruises weren't the only thing that decorated her fleece. There were cuts, stitches, track marks and other marks on her body that she could not decipher.
Confusion clouded her mind. There were marks on her marks that she had not noticed before but now. Like as if she got all of them in her sleep. The mirror itself was of an odd shape. With hexagonal tiles and laser beams running between its creases.
She touched the reflective surface and it was hard, like it had never been a liquid a few moments ago. This scared Aurora. Maybe it was a new way through which the security could keep an eye on her. But Niall had informed her that any form of such objects were banned.
Speaking of Niall, where was he. She had known him for a short period of time but he had given her answers, enough to trust him. And the last time she was with him, there had been a gun fire. Quickly examining her shoulder she found no gunshot wound, just a bruise. But the fire felt more than a bruise.
She felt chills run up her spines. It had to be Niall then. But was he dead? What this the reason he never showed up to her room?
Before Aurora could think of anything further, the mirror burst into millions of pieces and flew across the room.
