"A heartbeat?" Luda Mae looked astounded while I tried to keep my tears from spilling over. "Give me that damn doo-hicky." She snatched the stethoscope from Eugenia. She put the ear pieces in and put the metal piece to my stomach. Her eyes were intense.

She moved the chest piece around my stomach, searching for the heartbeat. She stopped on a certain spot on my abdomen. Her eyes flicked up to me.
"Oh my lord. I hear it." She whispered. She took out the ear pieces and handed it to the doctor, who had it snatched from her hands by Thomas.

"Katherine. Did you lie to me?" She hissed. Thomas stuck the buds in his ears and moved Eugenia out of the way. I could feel him move the cold piece around while Luda stared holes through me.

"I-I," I stuttered, at a loss for words. Tears started to streak down my cheeks. I looked down at my stomach to see Thomas listening intently. Luda harshly grabbed my chin, forcing me to look up.

"Did. You. Lie. To. Me?" I slowly nodded my head. There wasn't anything else I could do. Anger was evident in her eyes. She quickly raised her hand. I braced myself, ready for the harsh slap I was about to receive. Before she brought her hand down, Thomas grabbed her arm. He growled in disapproval. He gently pushed her out of the way. He now stood where she had. He knelt down next to me, a soft look in his eyes somewhat eased me.

He wiped the tears from my bright red cheeks.

"You lied."

"Yes. I did." There was no anger in his brown eyes. With one hand, he caressed my cheek. With the other, he let it travel down to my abdomen. He gently rubbed the no longer barren womb. He lifted up the bottom of his mask to reveal his heavily scarred lips. He leaned closer and kissed my forehead, then moved down to my stomach and placed a kiss there as well. You know that butterfly feeling you get in your stomach when something cute like this happens? Yeah I got that.
He gently pulled the faded dress back over my stomach, then stood up and went to the rocking chair to retrieve the blanket that fell. He walked back over to me and draped it over my shaken form. He somewhat tucked in the sides. He then left my sight. I'm assuming he motioned for the others to follow, because the room started to empty.

Once they left, I said a quick Hail Mary, then closed my eyes, embracing sleep.

****Third Person****

The Hewitt family, along with the doctor, gathered onto the porch. Hoyt, for the first time in weeks, kept quiet about the girl he had grown to hate. He didn't know what to say. Since she lied to his mama, he hoped she would be thrown out of the house. He wanted his old life back. He was envious of his little brother's happieness.

Everyone was talking at once.

"She lied?!"
"Mama can we throw her out now?"
"Shut the hell up Hoyt."

"That damn girl lied through her teeth!" Luda exclaimed.
"Mama, she's a young, scared girl. Of course she lied. She doesn't want to be here. And she sure as hell didn't want a baby." Monty spoke up, trying to calm his sister down. He thought of himself as Kay's advocate. She didn't have a voice in this family.
"She lied to me! And to Tommy!" She yelled back.
"Yes, but now we know the truth! She can have kids!"
"I should poison her. Chop her up and feed her to the damn pigs." Luda muttered under nasty cigarette breath.
"Mae! Don't you see? You're so caught up in her little white lie that you don't even realize that you'll be a grandma!" Monty yelled. He felt some sympathy for Kay. She was just thrown into this mess. Over time, he saw her as a friend. He couldn't really get along with his sister or his nephews. He saw her as more of a daughter now. She had no control. Not even with her own life anymore. The porch's occupants became quiet.
