Chapter 1

"Ana? Ana? Are you okay?" Krista waved a boney hand in front of my face. I snapped out of the daze I was in, and examined the girl in front of me, who was supposed to be my best friend. Krista Holden had long brown hair, which she kept in 2 neat braids held by pink binders, she has a small obsession with plaid sweater vests. Krista Holden had pink braces and plain brown eyes, and was a 'wiz' at math; she is kind and has a slight lisp.

I shooed my head "Yeah, I just zoned out."

Krista smiled and nodded, continuing to walk at our normal pace, putting the end of one of her braids in her mouth, and continued on with her boring story. I had just zoned out again, when I was snapped out of it by a sentence that came out of Krista’s mouth.  "So, I guess what I’m trying to say is... I’m moving..."

I paused for a minute, confused about what to do next. How would a normal person act? Would they cry? Scream? Run? "What?" I responded trying to sound shocked, but really what was going through my head was: What do I do? Should I call Simon? Do I go with her? If I don't go with her who am I?

"Yeah, my parents sprung it on me Monday night, I didn't want to tell you right away because it would be to real then. I mean, you’re my best friend, I don't want to leave you, or the school, or just Grace period!" Krista exclaimed loudly, fidgeting with the fraid ends of her braids.

"Well, you’re going to be fine, Krista, and we'll keep in touch, I promise!" I lied, we probably won't be allowed to...

In the distance I could see my house, beyond big gold gates of my neighborhood, Golden view. Not many people actually live in our gated community; sure most of the houses are occupied, but mostly just single working men and women who are too busy to have real families. Simon works for a major landscaping corporation. Part of being the leader of a group is making enough money to support all of your guardians and more just in case you have to take in more people or guardians.

"I can't believe it, I mean, I have never been outside of Grace before in my life! Now we are just going to move... My mom and dad said were moving to Texas, so far from Grace! And next week no less” Krista was now wavering from side to side a bit.

“Wow that’s soon Krista!" I said as we came to the gates of Golden view "You will be fine, I promise. Now I have to go, but I’ll talk to you tomorrow, okay?"

"Kay, by Ana, see you." She said giving me a hug and whispering "You’re the best friend ever."

I waved one final time before entering the code to our neighborhood. I walked up my steep driveway and entered my house, letting out a huge sigh of relief as I closed the door. Then, went on with my everyday routine. First, I went upstairs to check if Carter was home yet, which he was not. Next, I went downstairs and got a snack ready for Katharine and Celeste, the two youngest guardians at ages ten and seven. I sat down in the den and waited to hear the familiar slam of the door signaling someone was home.

When I was seven years old, I woke up in this exact room, without any knowledge of how I got there or what was in my past. Only that I was in a huge, unfamiliar house, with unfamiliar people. But, what I did know was that I hurt, my whole body hurt, all over. Can you imagine if you were me, I don't think I would have even been able to cope with that if it hadn't been for Simon, Carter, and Max, who were the only people here at the time. They made sure that I understood the rules and how life as a guardian is, and helped me discover my gift.

I didn't actually figure it out until I was eight years old. Simon and I had decided to go for a walk around the lake one day, while Carter and Max played basketball. When we got back from our short walk we heard some older boys picking on Max, who was also eight. Me, being the nieve person I was, marched right up to them and told them to stop picking on him. They laughed and pushed me to the ground. I remember being so mad, I closed my eyes and...Unleashed my strong and horrible power in him and he got really hurt, and it was my entire fault...
