Mackensie shoved her books into her tiny locker and slammed it shut. It was time for lunch but she was in no mood to go to the cafeteria and deal with all the people and the loud noises that they produced. That and there was always some type of drama going on. Once in a while it was amusing to watch, but when you get caught in the crossfires that's a different story altogether. Mackensie walked down the hallway of their two story high school and made her way towards an empty classroom.
"Where are you going?" Tanya asked, trailing after her friend as she went through her lunchbag, bringing out a small energy bar to eat.
"I'm going to take a nap or something," Mackensie replied as she reached for the knob and turned it. Even though she had gotten a decent amount of sleep last night, all the random dreams made her feel a little drained of energy. Dreaming for her was an infrequent event and the fact that she had so many the night before, along with the possibility of her tossing and turning so much, made for a restless night. As she scored the hallway, turning the knobs to each door, she finally found one that was unlocked. Taking a quick look down both sides of the hallway to make sure no one was around, she and Tanya snuck in quickly and she gently shut the door behind them.
It was against school regulations for students to be in classrooms unsupervised, but Mackensie learned how to not get caught. Since she hated going to the cafeteria and usually didn't want to go to the libraries either, she eventually figured out which classrooms would be empty during her lunch period. Depending on the teacher, of course, sometimes they would be locked. But there were a few that she could always rely on to be opened. There were still classes being taught during her lunch wave, but she did not have to worry about them. All the other teachers were to report downstairs in the cafeteria to supervise the students or have their own lunches, which left for many empty classrooms. Once she found one and got inside, all she had to do was keep the lights off and stay away from the door so no one could see her through its small window. There was enough light coming from the windows to where she didn't need electricity.
Tanya eventually started to accompany Mackensie on her hideaway trips, spending her time on one of the computers in the corner of the room and eating her lunch while Mackensie napped at one of the desks. It was the perfect time for her to read through her online magasines and check up on social media, as the computers in the library were only allowed to be used for homework. Occasionally Tanya would share her lunch with Mackensie, noticing how she barely ate and would not pack her own lunches for whatever reason. She wondered how her friend survived the rest of the day without being hungry.
Today was the same, the usual. Tanya walked over to the computers and started browsing the internet, while Mackensie headed over to a desk and sat down. The two sat in the dark with only the light from Tanya's computer screen and the dim sunlight fighting through the window blinds to illuminate the room.
Mackensie brought out her pocket watch once again and looked at it quietly while resting her chin on the outer edge of the desk. She held it in her hands as she slowly closed her eyes.
"Sleeping," she muttered.
"I know," Tanya replied. "I'll wake you up a few minutes before the bell rings so we can get out of here in time and not get caught."
