Last Year, August 24th 2016..
3 Days out of Fort Benning, Georgia

"... nnghh-.." I groan as the sound of an alarm clock pierces through my empty dream. Feeling like I only slept a minute, turns out to be ten hours. Almost noon, I try and force myself out of bed. To no avail.. until I hear my phone buzz on the nightstand next to me. I pick up my head, my ear folded and my right eye half shut, I reach for my phone.

"Good morning :)"

I keep looking at the message and take a moment before beginning to reply.

"Morning, hun" I say softly to myself as I type it into a message and send it back his way.

I put my phone down and sigh, rubbing my eyes and fixing my ear.

Doctors appointment... shit. I forgot..

I throw the warm blankets off and sit up, stretching and standing up. Putting on shorts and a t-shirt. I brush my teeth and comb my hair. Realizing how I look, I go back to my room and change into nicer clothes. Jeans and a fitted Grunt Style shirt.

As I bend down to put on shoes, my knee radiates with pain. I wince and hold it until the sharp pain surpasses and pretend nothing happened.

I step out of the house, locking the door behind me and hop into my car. A Dodge RAM 1500 V8. I begin my drive to the hospital about eight minutes away and listen to a mix of Five Finger Death Punch, Beartooth, and Tech N9ne.

I rush into the hospital and check in to Orthopedic and sit down in the waiting room.

I take my phone out and look down at it.

"How'd you sleep?
Hello?"

I begin to text back..

"Sorry, I had to get to my doctors appointment.. I've had better rest."

"Well, I hope you feel better.. :)"

I stare at the text with a blank expression and sigh.

"Thanks.." I shove my phone back into my pocket and continue my wait.

"Shadow?.." I hear from a distance. Picking my head up, I track the callout to a nurse holding some papers on a clipboard, wearing a smile.

"Yup.." I say softly and walk up to her."

"Good morning, how're you?" She asks as she signals me to follow while walking through the halls.

"I could be doing better.. Not that much sleep last night." I chuckle.

"Aww alrighty, was it from pain or.?" She asks.

"Yeah most of it. My knee." I respond.

".. Looks like that's what you're being seen for today. Come on in here and we'll get your vitals. After this, the doctor will come in." She walks over to a computer in the room and looks through all my records.

I sit up on the patted medical bench on the room and look around the room. I feel my phone vibrate a couple of times, but I ignore it.

"Okay, I just need you to verify some information.." she turns the monitor towards me.

"

"

I look over the information and nod my head.
"Yes ma'am. That's all correct."

"Alright, can I also have your permission to verify and view your blood type?"

"Yes, Ma'am. O-Negative." I answer.

"..Yep! That's it. I'll just take your vitals and the doctor will be with you shortly."

She takes my blood pressure and vitals before walking out of the room. I take my phone back out and stare at it silently. Just looking into the background picture that was my training unit back at Fort Benning. I look around the room and try to find something I haven't seen yet. I've been here multiple times and I always find something new about the room.

"Shadow?" My Doctor steps in.

"How are ya?" I smile and put my hand out for a handshake.

"Good, good. You're a lot.. bigger than when I last saw you.. The Army definitely made you a muscle head." He chuckled as he shook my hand and made his way over to the computer.

"Yeah, got in trouble a lot.. 'Corrective training' they call it.." I make air quotes. He shakes his head and smiles.

"Well hey, it definitely helped you out.... So, you're here for your right knee.. Fluid and pain?" He checks with me.

"The army doesn't always help you." I look at him and then the floor.

"Oh this happened in-service?" He looked at me.

"Yessir. While I was training.. I have the MRI's and X-rays on this disc.. the rest of what happened is on my CAC, but you need a government computer for that.." I chuckle and give him the disc.

He takes the disc from me and uses his computer to look at the scans.

"Hmm..." he taps the table with his fingers.

"Am I gonna live?" I ask playfully.

He walks backwards a couple steps and points at the screen, looking back at me.

"That... is consistent with Lyme Disease..

"W-what?" My eyes widen.

"I'm gonna extract some of the fluid here and I'll test it for the IGB & IGM proteins in it.. Hope you're not afraid of a huge needle.. Stay here."

He walks out with haste.

Well.. that was a Bomb shell...

A/N: And it hurt! No numbing agent used. Anyways, I hope you guys are enjoying the story so far. The story is gonna skip through my past a lot, but I'll try to keep the timeline solid.
