Carter

Wow. It was her. She looked the same, but older of course. She looked great. Pretty. Beautiful.

God, I'm turning into a girl.

When I helped her up near the bathroom and I knew it was her. I just knew it. I remembered her eyes. Hazel. She still looked the same, the long dark brown hair, and she had those dimples. She lost the glasses and the braces though. And God, that smile, who could forget that?

But she didn't recognize me at all, so I just went along with it. She would figure it out anyway.

While my mom gave her a huge back breaking hug, I started to panic. What was I going to say?

I turned to my older brother, Gab.

"Gab she's here. What do I do?!"

Gab rolled his eyes and took a piece of bread. "Just relax, talk to her. That's all you can do. What else do you have to do? You can't win a girl after one dinner. Jesus Carter." He said with his mouth full.

Then I turned to Jason. "Jason, I forgot does Darcy have a boyfriend already?"

"Actually she-"

"Carter." Gab kicked me from under the table and I winced. I turned to see her sitting right across from me and I smiled. Our brothers suddenly started a very deep conversation leaving me to talk to her.

"Hey! Coincidence huh?" I said to her.

"Yeah tell me about it." She replied with a smile.

"Hmm, still clumsy as ever." I teased.

"I am not!" She exclaimed, although she was smiling.

"Well remember that time when you slipped-"

"Yeah yeah yeah."

"Or that time when we went to Florida and you-"

"Ugh please don't remind me."

"Or! That time when you spilled your strawberry milkshake all over that guy's-"

"Okay! Okay! Fine! I was a clumsy child." She said and stuck her tongue out at me.

"And you still are." I smirked.

"Oh shut up." She said as rolled her eyes but she still grinned.

Beautiful.

She changed the subject after that. "So how was New York? Different from Dallas?"

I took a piece of bread and buttered it. "Oh yeah, totally. Traffic is bad, buildings are bigger, people seem busier, but it was pretty cool. I'm glad to be back though." I said.

"Yeah, I'm glad you're back too." She smiled.

Yes!

The appetizer came in and I helped myself to some stuffed mushrooms and a salad.

"So what school are you going to?" She asked while forking some of the salad.

"Actually my mom said she wants to me to go to Northridge, the school where you go right? So that way I'll know someone."

"Oh awesome! I'll show you around, if that's okay with you." She said shyly.

Yes! I was pretty happy about that.

Stay cool dude. Don't mess this up.

"Oh sure that would be cool." I said while sipping some water. Then I started choking.

Nice.

"Are you okay?" Darcy asked, her face full of concern.

"Oh yeah." I coughed.

After that, Darcy talked more about Northridge while we ate. It turns out she's really active in the school. She talked and talked about her friends and I listened. She still talks a lot like before. She told me about her friends, teachers, people I should look out for and which classes were cool and everything. I really wasn't worried about school but I just wanted to know if she had a boyfriend or not. She didn't bring it up so I was pretty hopeful.

We talked and laughed a lot and it was great. We got to also talk to our brothers who finally let us into their conversations and it was almost as if we never left.

Almost.

Darcy's different now. A good different. She lost the glasses and the braces so she looked different. But it was more than that. She was more... mature. She wasn't whiny or childish anymore. But either way, I still liked her.

The rest of the evening went by and my heart was beating so fast the whole time. I managed to keep myself calm which was good.

When it was time to say goodbye and good night, everything was going back to normal. We were still friends, but we weren't as close as before.

I hope I can change that soon.

"Bye Carter! I'm glad you're back I really missed you!" Darcy told me as she squeezed me. I squeezed her back.

She missed me.

Stay cool.

"Same here! See you around, plus we live just a few houses away from you guys anyway." She seemed surprised at this.

"Really?"

"Yup."

After that our parents said their final goodbyes and we made our way to our own cars.

"So brother, how did your mini dinner date go? Does she have a boyfriend?" Gab whispered.

"First of all, it wasn't a date. We were with you guys. Second, I don't know." I replied.

"Oh Carter! Darcy has gotten so pretty! Well I wasn't surprised because she always was! But look at her now!" My mom said excitedly. As my father started the car.

"Yeah. She looks a lot different the last time I saw her."

We drove home and we were all pretty tired so we all went up to our rooms. There were still some boxes that were unpacked in my room but I would just get them started later.

I stayed up all night thinking about that dinner. I helped her up twice. I smiled at the thought. Still clumsy as always. And then she hugged me.

When she hugged me, I just knew I felt something.

I just hoped she did too.
