*fifteen years later*
"Phoenix, it's time to get up now!" My mother's voice shouted from upstairs, today was my first day of my new school. This marked my fifth school I've been too, my family moved around a lot. I actually never complained about moving, it was more a blessing to me. No matter the school it was always the same, everyone saw me as the outcast.
I looked in the mirror, not liking what I saw and knew I was different. There was this feeling that something was wrong with me, but I just didn't know what. I had choppy medium length black hair with purple streaks. My eyes were a bright blue, which stood out against my pale skin.
"Phoenix, you better be up young lady!"
"I'm up mom!" I was seventeen, this was my last year of high school. The school year had already started which was fine, shorter amount of time I would have to be here. This school was the most different, Shadows Elm High School was a mixed school. They allowed not only human students but vampires as well, this was my first mixed school. I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little scared, vampires were known to be brutal and thoughtless. If you looked at them wrong they would devour you, and here I was getting ready to face my death.
I went into my closet an pulled out a pair of dark blue jeans and a House of 1000 Corpses t-shirt. That's one thing I had going for me, because of my love of all things horror and creepy, I had done my research on vampires. It was something that fascinated me, I knew almost everything about them. My parents weren't too happy with my research and I never knew why. After looking in the mirror one last time I headed upstairs, my room was in the basement because it was big. I needed the room for all my collections.
"There you are, are you excited about today?" My mom smiled at me and I couldn't help but smile back.
"Sort of, I'm a little scared too. Why do I have to go to a mixed school?"
"Well sweetie we figured you could handle it, with knowing do much about vampires." My dad answered behind me, he came up and kissed my cheek. "Just be yourself and don't try to talk to any of them. They won't start anything unless you provoke them first. Hurry up and eat, I'll be taking you today and then you'll be riding the bus."
As my dad drove to the school I thought about how the school was treated being mixed. Did the vampires eat with the humans? Maybe they were separated in classes and lunch, then I wouldn't have to be with them. "Sweetie? We're here." I looked out the window and noticed we were stopped outside the school. It looked like a miniature castle, grey brick walls with ivy growing around the building. There was four towers on each corner of the building, students were piling in. In big letters above the door it said 'SHADOWS ELM'.
I said goodbye to my father and started my walk to the office. The stares were making me nervous, I could feel every pair of eyes upon me. When I entered the office the secretary smiled brightly at me. "Hello dear, how can I help you?" As she spoke I could see her fangs, she was a vampire.
"Uhhh sorry, I'm Phoenix and this is my first day here. Can I ask a question?" She nodded and I already felt stupid about my question. "Do the humans and vampires get along?"
"You have nothing to worry about, most vampires will not bother you. However, if you have a problem just tell one of the adults. Now, here's your schedule and locker number. Have a great school year."
I felt a little better knowing not all vampires were monsters. The halls were crowed with both human and vampire students. I found my locker, another girl with blonde curly hair was at the locker next to mine. She saw me and beamed with excitement. "Hi there! My name is Rose, you must be the new girl. I'm a human, are you a human? You look like a human, what's your name?"
"Uhhh well my name is Phoenix and yeah I'm human."
She clapped her hands together, "oh Phoenix what a pretty name. Do you have a nickname? Can I call you Nix for short?" This girl acted like she had about ten cups of coffee and took speed.
"Yeah, my mom and dad call me Nix sometimes. You're quite the excited one. Rose, how long have you attended a mixed school?"
"Oh all my life, don't worry about the vamps. They won't hurt you unless you make them hurt you. Just stay quiet and out of their way. Now at this school there's two groups you need to be cautious of. When I see them I will show you, that way you know to stay clear. Well I better get to class, hope to see you again. Bye!"
I shook my head and chuckled at Rose. She was something else but she was friendly. I've never had a friend before, I kind of hoped she would be mine. As I closed my locker and started walking down the hall to my class, I heard whispers around me. I looked around to see students backing themselves against the wall, it confused me until I heard a voice behind me.
"Move human!" I turned to be face to face with four vampires. The one who I assumed was the leader had long black hair and facial hair. All I could do was stand there and stare, my body refused to move. "I said move!" No matter how hard I tried I couldn't, my heart was pounding fast. "Do you know who I am?" I was actually able to shake my head. "I'm Bert fucking McCracken, leader of the vampires and you're starting to piss me off."
"I'm sorry, I'm new here." He got close to my face, his fangs showing.
"Well you better learn quick to move out of the way when you see us coming or I'll make you my next meal."
"Come on Bert, don't play with your food." He smiled at the comment, it made my heart beat even faster.
"I don't know about that Quinn, I love playing with the humans." A bell rang, it pulled me out of the trance I was in and distracted him long enough for me to run away towards my class. Just as I turned the corner I smacked into somebody and fell to the floor. When I looked up I saw a mysterious looking boy staring back at me.
He had beautiful hazel eyes, his hair was red at medium length. As he stared at me he smiled and showed his fangs, that's when I stopped breathing. I just ran into a vampire, apparently today I was destined for a vampire to devour me as a meal. Soon another boy appeared next to him, he had brown hair covered by a beanie and had glasses.
"Gerard, we have to get to class. Just let her go this time."
"You're right Mikey, let's go." They both walked away and I laid down. This was going to be a long and torturous school year. Somehow I found the strength to get up off the floor and head to my first class, I was extremely late. It was art class and by the time I entered the teacher had already started the lesson.
"Can I help you?" I didn't see any fangs, a human teacher.
"I'm Phoenix, this is my first day."
"Oh right! Welcome, let's see where we can seat you." I watched her look around before she smiled and pointed. "There's a seat right next to Gerard, Gerard please raise your hand." I turned to look where this Gerard was, that's when I noticed the red haired boy raising his hand and smiling.
