"Hello? Hello?" Meri yelled out over the dark ocean.
Just like the night before, she snuck out to the ocean. But, this time it was to see the mermaid, Naia. Meri may of only just met Naia but she couldn't get the mermaid out of her mind. Meri had felt this way about other girls before. When she was eleven she had her first kiss with Skye Zephyr on the behind the school. She could still remember coming home and excitingly telling her parents. They had hesitated at first before smiling and congratulating her.
Meri had to see the mermaid again. She couldn't live without seeing her at least once more.
"Please. Are you still here?" Meri cried out.
She was about to yell again until something hit her head. She cursed and rubbed her forehead where whatever it was had hit her. Meri looked at the ground to see a pearl. She bent down and picked it up. It was a very pale shade of pink and sparkled in the moonlight.
Another one landed at her feet. This one a shade darker but still pink. Meri looked up and there, a few feet away, was the mermaid. She was even more beautiful in the moonlight.
"You're here."
The mermaid pointed at the pearls and made a motion. She held her balled up fists to her before extending them to Meri.
"They're mine?"
Naia repeated the movement until Meri picked them up and pocketed them. Meri then raised her head to make eye contact with the mermaid again. As she looked into her eyes her breath stopped.
In the moonlight Naia's eyes seemed to shine. They shined with hope and love and the ocean itself. Her hair flowed in the water around her as she swam closer and closer to the shore. Without even thinking Meri began to walk forward into the ocean.
They both stopped not even a foot apart. Gently and gracefully Naia sat down on the sand, her head just above the water. Meri followed, her shoulders emerging from the water. Naia was shorter than Meri, but she was also chubbier. Naia gave off a feeling of innocence and youth and hope. She seemed to breathe dreams.
"Hello," Meri whispered.
Naia made a sound and smiled sweetly. She held out her hand, two other pearls this time pure white and midnight black, toward Meri. Both pearls this time were on a string and formed a bracelet.
"For me?" Meri gestured to the pearls and then to herself.
Naia nodded and held them out closer to her. Slowly and gently, Meri grabbed them and began to examine the bracelet.
The pearls sparkled in the moonlight, like Naia's eyes. Even though at first they seemed to be pure white and midnight black, Meri could now see sparks of pink scattered around the pearl. She held them up to the moonlight and they shimmered even more. Meri rough them closer to her eyes and then she heard a faint whispering. Bringing it to her ear, the noise grew. It sounded almost like human speech mixed with the tongue Naia was speaking in.
"Is this, is this magic?" Meri looked Naia in the eyes.
Naia just gently grabbed bracelet out of Meri's hands and began to put it on her wrist.
Then the world burst into a faint pink light. Meri could see nothing but hear everything. Both voices, human and mermaid were growing louder and together. Meri felt as if she were floating in the ocean, but she wasn't drowning and she wasn't wet either. The waves of this ocean, real or not, rocked her back and forth. The voices seemed to come closer until they were right in her ears. And then they became one voice. Someone it spoke in English and mermaid at the same time but an entirely different language as well. And somehow, Meri understood.
"Mumareei?"
The pink faded away leaving Meri in the ocean. Naia had a hand on her shoulder and her ace was closer than before. Her eyes sparkled even brighter than before and her hair flowed like silk in the waves.
"Naia? What was-"
"Can you understand me now?" Meri couldn't speak, Naia was talking to her.
"Y-yes. I can. How?" Meri stammered.
Naia laughed. "The pearls. I had to pay a lot to get them, so don't lose them. They make you understand what I'm saying and-" Naia held up her hand, the same bracelet on her wrist. "And make me understand what you're saying."
"How?"
"Like you said-" Naia's smile grew. "Magic."
Meri couldn't form words. Here she was in the middle of the night, in the ocean, speaking to a mermaid, and using magic. Meri had always dreamed of mermaids since she saw The Little Mermaid. Ariel was probably her first gay awakening, although definitely not her last. And now there was a beautiful, real life mermaid right in front of her, talking and smiling at her.
"It's late, we should both be going home," Naia said. "But we can meet here again soon."
Meri could only nod. But neither of them made a move to stand up or swim away. They just stared into each other's eyes. Meri felt her head began to lean forward, out of her control, and Naia began to do the same.
They met in the middle, lips touching in a soft kiss. A kiss filled with pride, and filled with the salt of the ocean.
Author's Note: This was more for fun than anything. I just wanted to write about a gay mermaid. I hoped you enjoyed. Maybe if people like this I'll try to put together an actual story or something. But for now, I hope you enjoyed this short story.
