I wandered aimlessly over the dance floor, trying to avoid talking to people. I looked at my watch that I always kept hanging on my hip. It was only half past six. I sighed. Time was dragging endlessly. I saw Cedric talking to Aaron and Ethan, some of the older Creators. I walked over. Creator talk was always interesting. They didn't notice me approaching as they were talking in hushed voices and the talk seemed to be very heated. I hid behind a pillar and listened.
"...have you made preparations, Cedric? You know what might be coming,", Aaron said.
"I know, I know. I have made preparations,", Cedric said. "But what about Carbo? I can't just leave her like this. Who knows what might be coming for her?" I couldn't stand it anymore. I stepped from behind the pillar.
"What about me?", I asked. All of them turned to me. "What's coming?" Cedric gave me an reassuring smile.
"Nothing that will concern you in any near future, my dear,", he said. Ethan shot him a dirty look for lying so obviously to me. I wasn't stupid. I opened my mouth to reply but Cedric cut me off.
"Aidan, my boy! Come over here a second!", he called. A boy with frizzed brown hair, hazel eyes and a humoured smile I immediately liked walked over to us.
"Carbo,", Cedric said as Aidan joined us. "This is Aidan Andrews. He is Fletcher's new apprentice. Aidan, this is my daughter Carbo." Fletcher's apprentice? I just hoped his smile wouldn't turn into Fletcher's snide sneer.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Banner,", Aidan said with a smile. I smiled too. Then I saw through Cedric's plan, but what was I going to do without being rude.
"Nice to meet you, too Mr. Andrews,", I said to Aidan. Then I turned to Cedric with a frown. "You haven't answered my question." Cedric smiled.
"You two should go socialize like two normal young people,", he said. "I will talk to you later, Carbo, my dear." I pursed my lips, ready to argue with my father when Aidan grabbed my arm.
"Do you dance?", he asked and dragged me into the moving chaos of the dance floor.
"What was that about, Miss Banner?", Aidan whispered to me, when we were out of earshot of the old Creators.
"I have no idea, but I intend to find out,", I replied. "But the name is Carbo, Mr. Andrews. I hate formalities." Aidan grinned at me.
"Then, Carbo,", he said. "I insist that you call me Aidan." I grinned at that. I liked this boy.
"I was intending to." Perhaps this evening wouldn't be so long after all.
Little did I know about what a drastic turn my life was about to take.
