~Wes~
Despite the way my date with my Pretty Girl ended I still floated on a cloud of happy the next day. We meshed in a way I never did with any other girlfriend. Not that she was my girlfriend, not yet anyway. The girls I dated before usually gave up on me before we ever really got going, claiming I was too wrapped up in circuits and wires and codes. The problem was computers, technology, programming all made sense to me. They followed a logical route. People, girls most especially, did not. There didn't seem to be any logic to people and I often had trouble figuring out the right way to react to any given situation. If not for Isaiah I might be a total social idiot. My Pretty Girl though, she understood me! I had no idea how incredible it would feel to find someone who just knew me, and accepted me, no explanations needed. I hoped her understanding held up the first time she found me so absorbed in a project I ignored her, because that would happen eventually.
"WES!" Fingers snapped in front of my face, accompanying the sharp call for my attention. Glancing up I found four sets of eyes trained on me, waiting expectantly. I missed something, again.
"Wes," Lesia said again, voice gentler now that she had my attention. "You're the crucial player in this mission. Where's your head today?"
I stiffened before realizing Lesia's genuine concern. "I had a date last night."
"Hey, yeah." Isaiah spoke up as he pushed off the counter he'd been leaning against. "How'd it go with Gypsy?"
I grinned, unable to stop myself. "Really well." I frowned then, remembering how the date ended. "Until the end anyway. We got interrupted by your ex."
Isaiah's shoulders slumped as he sighed. "Dammit. I'm going to have to talk to her."
"You're going to have to commit the girl to an asylum." I stated. "You should have seen her last night. She went after Amanda hard, threatened her and everything. That chick's got a screw loose, Isaiah."
"You know, I saw her screaming at Amanda too, one day by the fountain near the hospital." Micah said. Isaiah's head whipped around, his eyes wide.
"Are you kidding? Please tell me this is a joke." Concern laid under the pleading tone of his voice. I never understood why he dated Stacey in the first place. She always seemed a bit off to me, but he'd been real into her when they first started going out.
"She always seemed off to me too." Micah's whispered words startled me and I realized I'd muttered out loud.
"Guys!" Our attention snapped back to our leader. "This is all amusing, but can we finish figuring this mission out before everyone else gets home."
I blushed, embarrassed to have started us going off on a tangent. Except for Lacey, we were the only ones home right now, which made it perfect for going over the mission we'd been given.
"I still don't understand why WE were given this mission." I leaned on the kitchen island as I spoke. "We're supposed to be on hold or whatever due to Scott's injuries." I gestured to the guy in question. Scott straightened, trying to hide the grimace of pain and failing.
"Scott will be on the sidelines for this one."
A sound of protest escaped Scott before his girlfriend speared him with a look and he slumped back in his chair.
"And we got this mission because no one else can do what you do, at least not on your level."
I scoffed and raised an eyebrow. I learned everything I knew from my dad.
"Fine, okay," Lesia sounded put out but her grin betrayed her, "no currently active member can do what you do."
"Okay, so what's the deal?" Micah asked.
