Drake stood in front of me, making the weird mutant things fly everywhere. Their haunting shrieks echoed.
"Get back!" Drake demanded.
I didn't pause for a second. I ran over to Xander's crumpled body. I could feel my heart pounding. I couldn't imagine waking up tomorrow knowing he was gone.
I looked back at Drake his muscular body moving gracefully as the mutants attacked him.
I put my hand on Xander's neck. I could feel a slight pulse. His glowing blue eyes looked up at me and I was flooded with relief
"What's wrong, Rosie? You look worried." He said standing up and brushing off his pants. I could tell he was in a lot of pain.
"I thought you died." I said quietly.
"Me? Die?" He smirked. "Sorry, Rosie its going to take a lot more than that to get rid of me." I hugged him tight, resting my head on his shoulder. I looked over at Drake and he stared back at me. Then the _shifters_ completely surrounded him. It seemed like more and more were appearing. They jumped at him clawing his face before he could react. For a second I couldn't take my eyes away from him.
"Rosie we should really get going. I don't think it would be a good idea to stick around much longer." Xander said nervously.
Then, suddenly, all of the shifters scurried off as if they were programmed to. Drake was laying on the ground unconscious with a puddle of dark red blood under him. His face pale and his body limp, but I could see his chest moving up and down.
"We can't just leave him here to die." I said pointing at him. "He just saved our lives."
"He only did it to save himself. He would kill both of us if he got the chance." He said jokingly, but I could also here a hint of seriousness in his voice. Xander was probably right, but I couldn't just leave him like this. He might even know where Lily is.
I stood there silently without saying a word or moving.
"Fine." Xander sighed. He slowly walked towards Drake and uncarefully lifted up his arm and I grabbed his legs.
We walked through the woods without saying a word. I could tell Xander was hurt pretty bad, I could see him limping.
"I think we should just rest here for the night." Xander spoke up. He sounded exhausted. I agreed. I knew we'd have to stop sometime, but I really wish we could keep going and find Lily sooner.
Xander started a small fire and we all sat close around it. A few hours past and Xander was already asleep. He needed it. I couldn't sleep. I watched the flames of the small fire.
Now that I think about, how much do I _really_ know Xander. Ever since I met him four years ago we've been best friends. He never talked about his past. How did he know about Drake or the shifters? Then again, none of us talked about our pasts. I guess, I just assumed that Xander grew up in an orphanage like me. Unwanted, forgotten, and alone.
I looked around to make sure nobody was around, like I did every few minutes. I noticed that Drake was awake. His shirt was off and his jeans were stained with blood. I could see fresh claw marks on his chest. I had to force myself not to stare at him.
I scooted over closer to him.
"Why were you trying to kill me?" I asked him quietly.
"Its not me who wants you dead and they didn't want me to _kill_ you." He said vaguely.
"I just need to take you to the headquarters, its what I've been assigned to do." He said as if making it clearer. It didn't. I wonder if they are the ones who kidnapped Lily.
"Do you like Xander?" I could tell Drake was trying to change the subject.
"What do you mean? Of course I like him, he's my best friend." I said quietly. I started to feel uncomfortable talking about this.
"Well, he isn't who you think he is, but you'll figure that out soon enough." Drake said, almost smiling. I tried not to think about what he meant by that. I need to stay focused. I need to find Lily.
"Did those people you were talking about take Lily?" I asked anxiously. "I mean, did they have a small girl with blue eyes and curly blonde hair?"
He shook his head. "They kidnap a lot of kids, I don't keep track anymore. Why is she so important to you, anyways?"
"She is my sister. I love her." I said. I could feel a cool breeze and my teeth started chattering.
"Love is a weakness." He paused, throwing a few twigs into the fire. "You'd be much better off without her. She will only hold you back." He said.
"How would you even know what _love_ is like." I said Angerly. I don't like it when people judge someone they know nothing about. Tell me that I'm weak and I should just let my little sister die. I held my breath before I would say something I'd really regret. I started to understand why Xander doesn't like him, but he could still help me find Lily, and that's all I really care about.
"Could you, please, just take me there so I could find her?" I begged.
"Why would I do that?" He asked.
"If you help me find her, I will let you take me away, without resisting. I promise." I say desperately.
"Deal." He said looking at me with a curious expression. I knew I didn't have any other choice. I have to find her, no matter the what it takes.
I just wish we were safe, back home, together. I layed my head on the hard ground and slowly drifted off to sleep.
