The SS Californian was less than 20 miles away when titanic hit the iceberg.

Multiple distress signals were sent out but the Californians wireless operator had already gone to bed.

The only ship that responded was the SS Carpatheia which was 58 miles away.

Even at full speed it took Carpatheia 4 hours to reach the titanics surviving passengers.
