Bodies of first class passengers found at sea were embalmed and placed in coffins aboard the recovery vessels.
Second and third class passengers were placed in canvas bags.
Steerage passengers and crew members were placed on piles of ice in the vessels' bow.
328 bodies were recovered from sea, 119 were too damaged in the tragedy to preserve and were buried at sea in canvas bags weighing down with iron rods and other bits of scrap iron.
