Chapter 2
I'm slipping through the Cracks of a Dark Eternity.
-Bad Apple (English Version)
I don't remember much of what I did to my siblings that day. All I know is that they haven't come after me since. Although, it's only been a few weeks. Everything seems to pass by in a blur. Siricco is always on my mind, and I can't help but think that I should have made sure he was safe, or at least been able to knock out my siblings before running. Thunder boomed over my head and caused me to flinch. I hated it when it started to rain like this. The lightning I didn't mind. It was the rain and the thunder I didn't like.
The dark gray clouds consumed the once blue sky. The humans: or unmarked, scattered trying to get away from the frigid rain. I simply pulled my hood up and continued walking down the road. It wouldn't be long until I arrived at the sewers. I know that it sounds gross, but it actually isn't half bad. Soon I saw a bright orange jacket headed my way at full speed. Knowing that it was Wrath, I stopped and rolled my eyes. Stupid girl! What is she thinking coming out into the open so carelessly? If she isn't careful the hunters will catch her. I started walking again and met up with her halfway from the sewer opening.
"WELCOME BACK!" She screamed. I quickly covered her mouth and pointed to the sewer. She smiled and nodded before rushing ahead of me to get out of the rain. I stopped for a second to make sure nobody was around when she had greeted me. Not seeing anyone I nodded my head and continued to the sewer at my previous pace. Once I was in, I was hugged tightly by the small teen age girl.
"WELCOME BACK!" She screamed once more. I rolled my eyes before facing her. I allowed my eyes to turn to the form of my snake ones.
"WHAT WERE YOU TRYING TO DO? GET YOURSELF KILLED?" I hissed at her. She flinched and backed away from me, tears forming in her large, hazel eyes. I ground my teeth together and turned toward the wall attempting to calm myself.
"I'm sorry, just not feeling up to socializing." I whispered knowing the petite wolf girl had heard my quiet apology. Walking slowly, I made my way into the section of the tunnel that belonged to me. I sat on the stone floor and let out a long breath.
I didn't like yelling at people, but the past few weeks had been killing me. I couldn't sleep without having the wretched nightmares plague my mind. Siricco was like a younger brother to me, a brother who actually cared for once, and I couldn't stop blaming myself for his death. I know that I probably sounds cheesy and depressed at the same time, but it's true. I leaned my head against the now moist wall and closed my eyes. Memories flashed in the darkness behind my eyelids. I heard something move towards me and tensed slightly. The object moved even closer, and I allowed my fangs to push out of my gums. I cracked my eyes open slightly; however, I couldn't make out the person's face as it was hidden behind a dark hood.
I opened my eyes and simply studied the figure. I had never seen this person before. I could tell it was a girl, and she clearly had a purpose for being here. She was carefully studying me, much like I was observing her. Before I could say anything, she ran off. Strange, I thought. Soon after the girl left I heard a crash, closely followed by a scream. I jumped to my feet and bolted through the dimly lit tunnels. Once I arrived at the scene, I saw Wrath curled on the ground, blood pooling around her body.
I bent down and placed her head in my lap carefully. She was out cold, and had a deep gash on her forehead. I quickly ripped off a piece of my hoody and pressed the cloth against her wound. No, no, no! This can't happen! Not now, not just after Siricco. I thought. I soon heard footsteps of others heading our way and prepared to defend Wrath with everything I had. I looked up just as Kaine, a dark haired raven demon, arrived shortly followed by the feline-like triplets.
"What happened here?" Kaine asked getting straight to the point.
"I don't know, all I heard was Wrath scream and found her like this." I whispered so I wouldn't cause the fair skinned wolf to get a headache.
"Look, why don't you all go search the tunnels. It's possible that someone could have found a way in here." I suggested, having a good idea already who did this.
"What are you going to do?" Sean: one of the triplets, asked.
"Hmm, let me think," sarcasm in my tone, "How about stay here and keep Wrath safe!" I shouted. The feline flinched from the tone of my voice. Damon: another of the triplets recognizable by the red streaks in hair, glared at me silently. The last triplet: Wolf, who was the shortest of the three, decided to speak up.
"Hey! Don't yell at him, he was just wondering!" he shouted. I let my eyes change and some of my snake-skin appear, the animal within wanting to defend itself.
"Maybe he should think about it. It is pretty obvious that I'm going to take care of her." I stated coldly motioning down to Wrath with my head. He backed off with and walked away with his siblings behind him. I looked back to Kaine who had been silent the entire time.
"What?" I hissed quietly.
"Why are you being so cruel? This isn't like you Vipes. You're not this distant, and you sure as heck never yell at those boys! Also, where in the hell is Siricco?" He shouted. I couldn't blame him though. He was right, I had never yelled at the triplets before, nor had I ever been so determined to isolate myself from them. Then again, I had had Siricco to pull me out of my spot.
"First, don't call me by my nickname. Second, I know this, but if you had seen what I did, then you wouldn't be the same either. And that is none of your business where he went. You know he goes off on his own sometimes without saying anything." I mumbled the last part. I looked away from his calculating gaze.
"Viper, what do you mean when you say, 'if I had seen what you did'?" He asked confused. I felt tears well up in my eyes and let my pale green hair fall around my pace to hide them. "Viper, tell me what happened!" he demanded. I took in a deep breath and carefully adjusted Wrath so she was lying on the ground. I quickly wiped my tears away and faced him.
Looking up with a cold stare, I told him the truth. "Siricco's dead, Kaine." He stared before cracking up. I knew he thought I was joking. The second he saw my expression hadn't changed, he started shaking his head. He didn't want to believe it was true, I could see it clearly in his eyes. Tears started to form in his forest green eyes.
"That can't be true," he stuttered and sobbed, "Siricco can't be dead. It's impossible." He choked out. Falling to his knees he covered his face. I wanted to go comfort him, but knew he wouldn't accept it, I had no idea what to do. The raven demon came over to me and grabbed me by the collar of my shirt and pulled me up.
"Tell me what you saw! How do you know he's dead? Tell me how you know!" he screamed in my face. I placed a hand on his shoulder as the tears began to form in my eyes once more. Removing his shaking hand from the collar of my shirt I gave my answer.
"I know, because I saw it happen right in front of me. And I couldn't stop it." Stuttering and sobbing, my knees buckled and I collapsed to the floor shaking. Realizing I had broken down in front of him, the shaking stopped. Quickly, I wiped my tears from my eyes and tried to pull myself back together. Managing to do so, I stood and helped Kaine up. He wiped tears from his eyes and looked at me with a pained stare.
"You better go and search the perimeter as well before the triplets get back and wonder why you're still here. Oh, and please don't tell them about this." I mumbled. He simply nodded his head and walked off without another word. I picked Wrath up carefully and carried her back to her section of the tunnels. Once I arrived, I set her down on her make-shift bed and moved to get the first aid kit. Carefully, I unwrapped my hoody from her head and pulled out a bandage. Wrapping her head, I took a quick glance around the room to make sure the mysterious girl from before hadn't come back. I was positive that the girl from earlier had done this. Most of all, I was furious at myself for not being there to help Wrath.
