I'm Only a Crack in This Castle of Glass.
-Linkin Park
The stars shone brightly throughout the sky. The darkness was chased away into the forest as the small girl clutched the strap of her old beat up bag. Sweat poured down her face as she slowly climbed through the small window of the chamber she once called her room. Her porcelain skin broke through the darkness and created a glow around her frail body. If she was caught, she knew it would be the end of her.
Everything she once held close to her heart was gone. Her parents held no more love for the young girl. They haven't had any love for her since the incident. Every day since then has been hell for her. The other children at school were terrified of her. Her siblings even threw rocks at her. She was truly alone. Nobody cared for this small snake eyed girl. Her hair once as white as cloud with its black tips was now a pale green color. Almost like early spring leaves. Her eyes as spirited as could be, even with their snake like quality.
But the small girl could see no flaw in her appearance. She thought she looked normal. Just because of her eyes people shouldn't run from her. She was always kind and helpful, yet people treated her like a pest. No one ever talked to her, much less showed compassion when she cried. She felt tired of being treated that way. It wasn't right. So she decided that she would be better off on her own. With tears in her eyes she glided across the roof, not making a sound as she passed by each window.
Once she was close enough to the edge, the girl jumped to the ground. Before she came close to the ground the girl, quickly gripped the side of the gutter and held on tightly. Having done this many times already, she carefully moved over to the pillar that held the roof up. Once she had a good grip on the pillar she slowly started to descend, getting closer to the ground by the second. Her palms were sweaty and she began to slip. This only made the child move faster and she quickly reached the ground without making a sound. After she had her balance, she glanced up at the house for the last time. This beautiful place had once been her home, but now it was nothing more than a house that she would never return to. She took a few steps back and turned to the forest, sprinting to the trees, wanting to be free of this place.
But, before she came close to the edge of the dark wonderland, the door of the house burst open. Light oozed out of the now open door; two shadow figures stood at the threshold looking in the girl's direction. She froze, all of her breath gone in the wind. The only thing she heard was the frantic beating of her heart as she turned and bolted into the forest. The people she had seen frightened her, and she knew they were coming to get her.
Dozens of branches scratched her face, thorns stabbed her bare feet, and the bushes grabbed the edge of the nightgown she wore. However, she didn't slow as pain shot through her small body. The only thing she knew was that she had to get to the river, then and only then, would she be safe. The sound of her pounding heart filled her ears as adrenaline coursed through her veins. It wasn't long until she heard it, the magnificent sound of water made its way to her sensitive ears. Her bright purple eyes widened and a small glimmer of hope could clearly be seen in them. It wasn't long until she saw the dark waters.
With a leap she landed in the water and was completely submerged. Icy waters began to drag her frail body away from the banks. Working her way to the surface of the water slowly, her lungs began to feel like they would explode at any second. Finally, she burst out of the water, gasping for air. She saw her siblings on the river banks calling out to her.
"VIPER! GET BACK HERE NOW!" her brother, Claude, shouted. Slowly, she shook her head and let the frigid water carry her away. Instead of turning and leaving, her brother stumbled down to the bank and into the waters. Viper noticed her sister run after her brother and stop him from going too far into the water. He struggled for a moment before turning and running back into the forest. This was just the beginning; Viper already knew that this would not be the last time she heard from her family.
Fear worked its way into her heart and caused her to lose her breath for a moment. She knew that her siblings would not let her get away so quickly. So, she turned from the banks and swam with the current. If she was going to survive this night she had to get out of this place before her parents were alerted. There would be no chance of survival then.
