Shawn's POV

The five of us were all hanging out again. Nash, Taylor, Matt, Cameron, and of course, myself. We haven't all hung out together in a while, it's usually Cameron and Nash hanging out, Matt hangs out with his other friends, Taylor does whatever, (nobody really knows) and I've been busy hanging out with Madilyn.

She has been avoiding me for three whole days, so basically the last time she talked to me was when I confessed that I loved her. We've only been texting, but I could tell her mood wasn't the same as usual. Why would I do that... it was too soon. Hopefully I didn't ruin things for good between us. I don't think I did.

"Hurry up mom!" Nash yelled to the backyard where his mom was with his younger sister Sky. Apparently Nash's mother wanted to have a little cookout, so she was out there making stuff while Skylynn played in the grass with her horses.

"Well I don't exactly know how to use this thing!" She yelled from outside. The five of us were in the living room, starving. Nash kept yelling at his mom to hurry up with the food but I was just wondering when Madilyn was coming home. I was told that she was out with her friends Haylee and Ariel.

"Okay I'll be right back because my mother doesn't know how to use a grill." Nash tells us before rolling his eyes, going to join his mother outside.

"So how are things with you and Madilyn?" Taylor speaks up, looking at me as Matt shifts uncomfortably in his spot. Cameron stares at me with a blank expression.

"I'm pretty sure you already know things aren't going great." I reply.

"Why not, though?" he continues to ask but I just shrug. I was going to reply but I don't because the front door opens, and Madilyn's voice fills the somewhat quite room.

"So what you're saying is- if Justin Bieber asked if he could take your virginity you wouldn't let him? I would be all up on that shi- oh. Hi guys." Her cheeks automatically turn red as she sees us sitting in her living room. Her two friends are standing behind her.

"You'd be all up on what?" Cameron asks, raising his eyebrow. Matt is laughing along with Taylor, and I'm just sitting there not knowing what to do.

"Nothing." she says just as Ariel says: "Justin Bieber's dic-" but Madilyn slaps her hand over her mouth before the redhead could finish.

"What are you guys doing here?" she changes the subject, her cheeks still a little bit red. I can just tell that she's ignoring my presence, I can feel the vibe she's sending me.

"Your mom decided to have a cookout, so we were invited." I say, and she still doesn't look at me. She just nods and sits down next to Taylor. Ouch.

Her friends sit on the other couch that Cameron is sitting on, and Matthew is still spread out across the floor. I'm on the love seat by myself.. without the person I love.. while she sits next to someone else.. oh.

We sit there in awkward silence for a few moments before Sky comes running in with two horses in her hands. "Taylor! Will you play horsey with me?" she runs up to Taylor right away. Why does she want him to play horsey with her? I can play horsey better with her...

Taylor laughs, and picks her up into his arms. "Of course girl! I call the white horse!" He yells and I hear her giggles as he runs out of the house with her.

Madilyn gets out her phone and does something on it, while Haylee has a conversation with Ariel and Cameron. I think Matt fell asleep on the floor, I can't tell. Suddenly, my phone vibrates in my lap and I look at it to see I have a text from Madilyn. I glance up at her and she's already looking away from me, so I open the text.

It said: will you go up to my room in 5 minutes so we can talk?

My breath hitches in my throat as I look at the text over again. I swallow the lump in my throat as I look up her, and since she's now looking at me I nod, letting her know that I'll be there.

TAYLOR'S POV

There's a blanket on the grass in the backyard, and Skylynn has about twenty horses on it. I sit down on the blanket with the white horse in my hand, and she tells me what to do with it.

"My sissy thinks you're cute." she giggles after a while, nudging her horse with mine. This little girl is obsessed with horses.

"Oh, she does?" I laugh.

"Yes. She told me. I told her to be boyfriend and girlfriend with you and kiss you.. on the lips!"

"Want to know a secret?" I whisper, leaning down to her level and looking around for dramatic effect. She nods eagerly and I say quietly, "I did kiss your sister on the lips.. and she liked it." and she gasps, covering her mouth with her hand.

"Ew!" she screeched and I just start laughing.

SHAWN'S POV

I go up to Madilyn's room in the next five minutes, scared for what's to come. I don't know what I'm expecting, but I don't think it's going to be good..

I sit on her bed and start to chew on my nails nervously. I wait for a total of three minutes before the door opens and she steps in. I quickly stand to my feet. "Madilyn."

"Shawn." She lets out a breath, standing a few feet away from me.

"What's going on?" I ask, stepping closer to her but not too close.

Her eyes start to water, "I don't think... I... um. I don't know what to say..." She takes in a breath, before blurting out: "I think we need to take a break."

"A break?" I question, my voice quiet. My chest tightens as I look at her, and I feel my eyes well up with tears. "No..."

"Yes, a break. I need to think about some things, I guess." is her explanation.

"Please don't do this to me, Madilyn. If this is about me saying I love you, I'm so sorry for rushing into it. You don't have to love me back.. I can wait for you to say it. Just please don't do this."

"I kissed Matthew." she whispers, but it's loud enough for me to hear it clearly. I'm taken aback, what? "The day you told me you loved me.. I kissed him. Well, he kissed me and I tried to stop him at first, but I admit I ended up kissing him back and I don't know why."

I stare at her, shocked. I don't know what to say. "Why... Why would you do that?" There's a crack in my voice and she looks up.

"I don't know." she frowns at me, guilt painted all over her face. At least I know she feels bad about it.

"You don't know? You're going to tell me that you kissed someone else, my best friend, and then you're going to say you don't know why you did it?! I love you Madilyn but c'mon, seriously?!" I run my fingers through my hair as she licks over her bottom lip before taking it in between her teeth.

"I'm sorry, okay? This is why I wanted to take a break, Shawn. I don't wanna hurt you again, you mean a lot to me."

"Well if that's what you want.." I say. My heart is hurting so bad. I lean down and kiss her on the cheek, a habit. "I love you Madilyn, don't forget that."

I turn to leave her room, and it might just have been me hearing things, but I swear when I closed the door I heard her whisper, "I love you too."
