Stepping outside ZuZo High, makes me a little emotional. I have been attending this school for years, and now I can't believe my time here is over. I think back to my freshman year. Ellayne, and I loved going to football games, in the Autumn chill. We would pretend we knew everything that was happening in the field. Afterward, we had sleepovers. Those will be missed. I think about Ellayne, and how will survive without her here. She's gotten her life figured out. El got a full ride to a college in New York city, her dream college. Columbia University. When she got the acceptance letter she called me screaming, causing me to panic a bit. I am really excited for her, and sad to see my best friend leave me. I take one last look at the High School that I struggled, grew, and learned so much, and got into my car.
As I am driving I spy a girl with an umbrella in one hand. Rain pounds heavily on the hood, and next the wind pick up. As I pass the girl I see her umbrella fly out of her hands, and she sits still and lets the water soak her completely. I reach a stop sign, and wait for her to pass me.
As she passes me, her eyes look sad, her face red and puffy. I can tell she's been crying. I don't recognize her, so I figure she must be in intermediate or a private. I put down the window allowing the water to enter in.
"Hey do you need a ride?" I ask a little too loud.
She jumps, and turns to me, puzzled.
"um I don't kno.." She starts but I cut her off
"Okay this is a lot of rain, and you're going to get sick from it.. Come on" I yell as the rain and wind pick up.
She looks ahead, and then back at me.
"uh fine" She climbs inside my car, as I shut the windows from the storm.
The car ride was pretty much silent, and filled with rain drizzle.
By the time we reach her house the rain stops, and sunlight begins to appear. I look forward, and gasp at the site of her home."Wow this house" I turn to her, and she smiles.
The house sits on a mountain. The house is everything a home should be, modern, polished, and beautiful. The side of the house has glass windows. Everything around the house is green. Large trees surround the box modern house making it look small.
"Do you want to come in?" she asks with a smile, I nod speechless.
As we make our way into the house I stare and take in the beauty of this home. We walk in a white room with white chairs around a glass dining table, hanging above a chandelier. I think this is my favorite room. As we keep walking through the house I fall in love with each room we enter. We enter a polished kitchen and she takes a seat in a Stoll in front of the counter.
"So what's you're name?" I ask with a laugh. She turns to me as I approach her.
"oh ha. Fern.. Fern Volkov" she says with a shy grin. " I am Laney Fleury" I say with a wave.
Hours pass, as Fern and I talk like we are old friends. She tells she's a college student, and I tell her today was my last day of school. We began to talk about our messy lives, while drinking Hot Chocolate in the living room. I look around the room admiring the painting hanging, I stop my gaze on a picture frame. The frame is grey, rusty, but beautiful. A boy with the most amazing eyes stares back at me with Fern right next to him, both wearing a bright smile. I continue to stare at the picture, taking in the space around me.
"That's my brother" Fern whispers next to me. I turn my attention to her.
"He lives in Seattle now, he moved out a couple years ago, and hasn't been back." Her eyes drop and I feel sad for her.
"why Seattle?" I ask, curious.
She takes a sip of her hot chocolate and continued
"He got a full ride for business." I nod and we sit in silence.
