My body lays still as waves carry me further, and further away from shore. I lay in peace. My arms are stretched beside me, I rest, feeling the sun beating against my face. My eyes squint open, my body becomes heavy. Above me is darkness, everything around me is dark. I glance at the water beneath me, and it swallows me whole. A force pushes me down, I try to fight it, to swim back to where I belong, but my body is weak, tired. I look around at my surroundings, and I see a glimmer of light in the distance. I continue to descend to the bottom of the ocean, I don't fight it anymore. Though I am surrounded in darkness, the water is calm, warm, and I find peace. I close my eyes, allowing my body to relax, and just be. As my eyes are closed, I feel a chill, around me. I open my eyes, and see a bead of light floating around me. My body stops descending, as the water slowly turns clear blue around me. I look above me to see the surface. The sunlight beats inside the water making a pathway. The light begins to float to the surface, and I watch it go. As the light travels above the water, darkness creeps around me, I panic.
Quickly, I swim to the light. As I reach for the light, It fades. When I wake the next day Galen is gone. I reached for my phone, and had one text message from El.
"You awake yet?" Looking at the phone gave me a headache, so I responded and put my phone away. I sit in my bed feeling lonely, and a bit hungry. I Dismiss my feelings and walk to my window. Above the window there is a shelf full of books, I have obsessed over the years, and read every year for fun. But on top of the books there is a orange envelope. I grab the envelope and head back into my bed.
" Laney,
I am sorry I had to leave so sudden. I had to leave in such short notice, because Galen and Fern need me right now. I know you will understand, but I just wanted to write this letter instead of texting you , I know you're eyes might still be very sensitive to the light, because of the concussion.
Anyway, I will call you as soon as I can to check in.
Love, Galen."
I have a concussion, great. I fold the letter and place it on the night stand beside me. What happened to Fern and Ollie, I hope they are okay, I whisper as I lay my head back into my soft comfortable pillow, and dream.I'm in a field of sunflowers, and everything around me is beautiful. The wind flows around me and I dance with the wind. I'm wearing a light blue sundress, long and flowy. I'm happy. I see bright colors all around me. The sky is clear of clouds, and the sun is smiling down on me. The sunflowers face the direction of the sun and sway to the rhythm of the wind. My dress trails behind me as I run around the flowers, in slow motion. This is perfect. As I run I feel the earth beneath my feet, and continue running, as my hair floats along. As I run I see a figure in the distance. I stop running, and watch the figure step into a maze of roses. Bright red roses, they stand tall, and still, facing the sun. I take a step, and make my way in the direction of the maze. Curious.
I approach the roses, hesitant. I take one step in the maze, and instantly I am hit with a strong scent, a sweet scent. The scent reminded me of someone, but I couldn't remember who. I stand still inside this maze, and take in its beauty, and perfect way. I take another step, admiring its beauty. I walk around the maze, and I feel at ease, I feel at home here.
I walk into an open field, and inside the field sits a tiny glass house. In front of the house sits a dry, dead garden full flowers. I make it to the house and peek inside to see nothing. Empty. I look all around the house, and see no sign of life. I take one last look at the house, and imagine how beautiful it could be. As I make my way into the maze of roses, I spy a figure across from me. I don't jump, I'm not afraid of this figure. Instead I make my way toward the figure, and the closer I get to the figure, his face gets blurry. I can't make out his face. I approach him and his face is completely blurry. He wears a white dress shirt, with white dress pants, his hair messy, but calm, and familiar. He reaches out for my hand, and I take it. This feels right. His hand grips mine and we start to walk toward the glass house. The closer we get to the house, I see the dead flowers slowly grow and gain their color. When we reach the house the flowers are fully blossomed and the house door opens, welcoming us. I take a step and the figure stops me. We face each other and he reaches for my other hand, I accept it and feel a breeze against my hair. He takes a step toward me, his face still blurry. I sit still, and wait as time slows around us. I take the next step, our faces close now. He drops my hands, and softly holds my face. I close my eyes, and hold his arms. I feel the bliss breeze take my hair, the bright sun, softly beating. This feels right.
I step closer to him and our foreheads rest against each others. I still can't see his face.
He removes his forehead from mine, still holding my face in his palm and takes another step closer to me.
The wind picks up, and the rose petals start to drift away from their homes. Rose petals surrounded us, I look up in amazement. I start to smile, and breath in the sweet scent.
" wake up" He whispers to me.
"I don't want to wake up" I start to say, as everything around me starts to blur.
