Prompt #1- A Twist in Time

Prompt Used-

It was a shock seeing a familiar face in a strange crowd. There were no words to describe the feeling.

The smell of coffee always calmed me down. It'd been a week since the nervous flutters in my stomach had started and I had no idea why.

I looked up from my book to see the red haired waitress flirting with yet another boy. It was rather amusing watching the boy shuffle his feet, trying to focus his gaze anywhere else but her as the light reflected off her piercing and shone in his eyes.

Still watching their reaction I took a sip of the scalding hot coffee and almost spit it out as my tongue burnt in protest at the temperature. Deciding to wait a little longer before drinking it, I turned back to my book.

But..... there was something incredibly odd about it. I blinked once, twice, thrice, not understanding what had just happened in the time interval I'd taken to absorb my surroundings.

The newly bought book's white pages had turned an aged ochre, the words on the page slightly lighter. Rubbing my eyes I looked back up only to have my mouth hang open in sheer shock, eyes wider than ever.

In the place of the young red headed waitress stood a black haired one...except, her hair wasn't normal, no; it shone like steel. Scratch that, it was steel, jet-black spray-painted steel.

Her face looked flawless, nose perfectly angled, lips full, a dark red, and her eyes... one of her eyes was a cold blue, but the other black; completely black with no whites.

And then her gaze shifted towards me.

I gasped, sinking deeper into my seat wanting to disappear.

Her eye wasn't completely black. It wasn't even a normal human eye. It was a freaking camera lens. Or at least that's what it looked like.

I saw it shift as it zoomed in on me, staring without moving. Getting even more uncomfortable by the second, I grabbed my bag in a rush, left my coffee and walked towards the door, my gaze trained downwards.

Unfortunately enough, I stumbled over someone's chair leg in the process and as I looked up at the person to apologize my voice trailed off. A twenty-year-old man sat there, his appearance resembling perfection, impeccably dressed, eyes a dark brown.

What was happening?

I took a three sixty-degree spin, eyes skimming each and everyone in the cafe. Their eyes in turn trained on me.

All of them, each and everyone looked like they'd turned into one of those vampires from that movie, what was it called, twi- something wasn't it?

It was ridiculous really. Too ridiculous to be real.

I pinched myself hard and winced as I felt the pain. Not a dream either, I grimaced.

Without casting another look at anyone else I walked outside and shut the door behind me. The street was more or less empty other than a few robots milling about.

Hold on a second- Robots?

But robots don't exist. Not in 2014 anyway. Things were getting weirder by the second and I didn't like it one bit.

Keeping my head down, my shoulder length dark hair covering my face, I started walking. I knew that I had to get out of there and fast.

Deciding to go to the public library, I speed walked, almost breaking out into a run.

Rounding the corner I climbed up the steps of the grand building, the crumbled stones crunching under my feet, slightly out of breath.

I gripped the rusted door handle, took a deep breath and pushed open the door.

Everything was still the same.

Heart hammering in my chest, I rushed to the newspaper stand in the corner.

17th April 2100

"What the fudge?" I whisper-shouted.

Shocked, my mind blank, I started walking towards the nearest bookshelf trying to slow down my racing heart. I crossed a few people on the way that, to my dismay, also looked like vampires with their flawless appearances.

Somehow I ended up in the last isle, my hand skimming over book spines, eyes pretending to read the title names. Though in reality, the titles were a blur of nonsensical words while my mind whirled around in confusion.

Sighing, I turned away from the books and just stared ahead, looking at yet another perfect creature belonging to the enhanced human race, when my eyes met his and I jolted upright, my back straightening at the realization.

It was a shock seeing a familiar face in such a strange crowd. I couldn't describe the feeling inside. It was a strange mixture of happiness, a little bit relief, and more nervousness that anything else.

His eyes widened, alarmed, "What are you doing here?"

"It's a library, what more can I do here than look at books," I said the first think that came to my mind.

"Right. Always the sarcastic one aren't you, Cassandra," he crossed his arms over his chest.

"Uh yes..."

"You forgot my name," he narrowed his eyes.

Crap, he was right. I decided to wing it anyway.

"No I didn't. Your name's Paul isn't it? You're the Pizza delivery guy?"

"No. My name is Pierce and I'm the guy you ditched on a date as some kind of practical joke," his eyes grew even narrower if that was possible.

Oh, I remembered him. He was that guy. I winced at the memory. It so wasn't cool of me to go along with the joke.

"What are you doing in this era anyway? How did you even get here?" he went on to question.

Era? The way he said it so casually, it was apparent that this guy knew something about what was going on.

Deciding to get on his good side, I explained what had happened down at the café along with a bit about how sorry I was for playing 'date-ditch' all those years back.

"It's fine," was all he said, "I had no interest in you anyway. I was on a mission so the date was merely a part of it."

That caught me off guard. Since when were dates part of a mission? And what was a sixteen year old doing on a mission in the first place?

Before I could insult him back though, he scrutinised me, the spark of realisation gracing his eyes.

"You're a time traveller. Most travellers make their first jump when they're sixteen. That's how you reached this era!" He snapped his fingers.

I was a bit speechless at first. "Time travelling? Isn't that impossible or something?"

"To a normal human, yes. But for you, well let's just say, it's in your genes."

"Say I believe that, what about you? Are you a time travelled as well?"

"Somewhat. I'm an agent investigating a revolution. When I turned eighteen, the Director sent me through the newly invented time machine on a top-secret mission."

That explained some of it considering the fact that he looked two years older than when I last saw him.

"Also, I think I should mention that the people aren't vampires, they're half cyborgs," he added as an afterthought.

"Oh. Cyborgs. Now why didn't I think of that?" I said sarcastically.

"Because you're stupid?" Pierce smirked.

"No, because none of this is supposed to be possible!" I waved my hands wildly in the air to add emphasis.

Luckily enough I managed to slap his arm though it didn't affect him one bit given his obvious muscle growth.

Curse my luck.
