Pain. The only thing my mind could register. The searing, white hot pain that coursed up my spine was electrifying.
The pain, and the bright headlights of the Mercedes that rammed my body to the ground moments ago. The paper bag of pastries I had in hand were now obliterated. Crushed cookies were now spread all along the dark road.
A shrill scream left my lips, possibly piercing the eardrums of anyone close by. Highly doubtful, it was 4 A.M. There wasn't a soul awake at this hour.
As I fell to the ground in agony, the Mercedes drove around me, abandoning the scene of their crime. Their tires screeched away through the deserted streets of Volterra. I laid there in the middle of the crosswalk, stomach down, praying someone would find me. I couldn't move. I couldn't speak. The world around me was turning and twisting, making any sense I had left vanish. I could feel blood trickling down the back of my neck and staining my shirt. My semi tan skin seemed to pail under the streetlights. The cold began to nip at my skin, but I was too weak to shiver.
Everything soon become black, and I surrendered to the void.
