Over the course of three and a half days, the castle had been thrown into a swirling vortex of havoc and mayhem. Between Heidi and Dimitri rushing around the castle making preparations for Carter's room, and Caius plotting a vendetta, there were simply not enough hours in the day for the servants to clean up after the coven. The more Caius thought about the incident, and his daughter laying disabled in his bed, the more rage filled his being. More so than usual.  (👀)

Every chance the king got, he'd rush to his room and visit Carter. He'd be damned if she wasn't comfortable every second of her recovery. Caius would burst through the door, out of sheer excitement. More often than not, he'd accidentally scare her awake from the loudness of the heavy wooden door slamming against the stone wall.

Caius would dismiss Felix until further notice, then spend countless hours talking with Carter. He liked to test her memory; see if there were any triggering words. So far, he found none.

All the king would have to do is look at her bruised and battered form and his mood would go one of two ways.

He'd either calm down from her presence and her melodic voice and wonder how this child had him wrapped around her finger so quickly; or his anger would boil over. He'd never let her see him angry like that. Oh, but she could tell he was. His demeanor would  change at the drop of a hat, and although she knew that the anger wasn't directed at her, but at the man who ran her over, she still couldn't help but flinch at the sudden coldness of his voice.

And then, Caius would get even angrier at that! Because someone caused such horrible pain in her life, that even with amnesia, she still subconsciously remembers the manner of her abusers.

Both Aro and Carlisle had told the king and queen about her abusive past. While Aro shared her memories, Carlisle backed up Aro's claims with medical evidence. Carlisle informed them of all the bone fractures he found that weren't set properly after being broken. He also told them of the older bruises he found. But the queen could no longer hold her venomous tears back when the good doctor told them of the long vertical scars that littered her pale back. Caius already had the worst temper imaginable, and this didn't help in the slightest.

After hearing of this, Caius and Athena marched down the quiet corridors back to their room. There wasn't a soul in sight, save for the occasional vampire. But it was 4 a.m afterall.

Without so much as a thud from their footsteps, the couple made their way from the lounge, then into the separate bedroom where Carter was fast asleep. Felix, having heard them enter, was already standing and giving a slight bow. Caius quickly dismissed Felix without so much as a second glance. Once he was gone, they went to her bedside.

They carefully pulled the quilt away from her body. She didn't stir. Caius, standing at the right side of the bed, slowly maneuvered her body so she laid on her side, as opposed to her back. Once on her side, with her arm slung over the bunched up quilt, Caius slowly lifted the faded black V-neck she wore.

She was sick of the itchy hospital gown, and having told Caius this, of course the father jumped up from the bed and raided his closet in an effort to find something comfy. So, he pulled an old, soft shirt he had yet to part with. Without further delay, he helped her change into his old shirt and a loosely fitting pair of boxers. She was quite comfy under the quilt in just a shirt and underwear, and with a soul burning glare from the blond king, no one said a word about her indecency.

Once the shirt was lifted to her shoulder blades, Caius hesitantly glanced down. The doctor was right, of course.

Long vertical slashes trailed down her back. The fleshy pink lines started at the tops of her shoulders and ended at her bottom, making the couple grimace. The road-rash was still what you would consider bad, but it looked amazing compared to what it used to be.
