" Pssst, " A whisper came from my right. Silence followed. " Pssst! " The voice came again, " Hush up! She's asleep! " I slowly opened my eyes to see the two girls that had sat next to me on the plane, staring at me. " Oh sorry, we weren't trying to wake you up. " One girl apologized. " It's ok, " I explained, " I didn't realize I was gonna fall asleep. "
The girls continued to look at me with curious eyes, " So, what's your story? " I asked the girls. " I'm Lillian, " The girl with dark brown hair told me. " And I'm Daisy, " The blonde haired girl added, " We were visiting our cousins in Panama City, but we're heading home now. "
" Same, " I commented, " I was visiting my aunt, but it's time to head back to the farm. " Lillian looked at me and said, " I thought you look like a farm girl.. " Daisy stared at her, " Lillian! Way to be judgemental! " Lillian laughed, " Well she has a natural-looking tan, and she just has the 'country' look, especially with those clothes. "
I glanced down at my plaid shirt, jeans, and boots. " Yeah, " I agreed while laughing, " I see whatcha mean. " Lillian squealed, " She even has a drawl when she talks! " I smiled back, and we all ended up giggling over my drawl.
" Wow, " Daisy commented, " you're actually really pretty. Especially your eyes, they're such a beautiful color of green! " I slowly smiled, not knowing how to reply, " Uh, thanks, you two are very pretty too. " They giggled and thanked me. Typical city folk.
A voice came from the speakers, " Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking, please buckle your seat belts, turn off all electronics, put your luggage under your seat, and prepare for landing in five minutes. "
I glanced out the window, and saw the multi-color fields on the ground. Many shades of green, yellow, and brown layered each other, and looked similar to the pattern of my quilt back home. Home. I remembered that I was almost home!
" What's got you all perky now? " Daisy asked, noticing my change in mood. I smiled back, " I didn't realize how much I've missed home, and I'm almost there. " Lillian added, " Yeah, we get it, we have one more flight and then we'll be back home, in Oregon. "
This got me curious, " You two are from Oregon? " I asked. " Yeah, " Daisy replied, " we live in a little town set in a valley. " I hadn't heard much about Oregon, I just knew that is seemed like a friendly state. " What's it like? " I questioned.
This time, Lillian sat up and answered, " Oh, it's so beautiful there! The spring and summer brings the trees and grass to different shades of green, the flowers all in bloom, and the sky is a bright blue with fluffy white clouds with bright sunshine. Then autumn turns everything into a crisp orange, yellow, and red. And finally, the end of fall and the beginning of winter brings well...rain but also sometimes snow. "
I tried to take in all the information, " Well, sounds a bit like where I live, except for the winter and rain thing. It's usually just hot and sunny weather, with a couple months of cooler weather. " We compared and contrasted our states until the captain told us we were preparing to land.
As the plane began to decline, I saw the familiar fields and surroundings come into view. " Well, that was a nice ride. " I commented as the plane began to slow down on the runway. The two girls agreed, and hoped their next flight would go just as smoothly.
" Hey, can we have your number? " They asked me, and we exchanged cell phone numbers, just as the plane came to a stop. " Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking, you may collect your luggage at this time, and exit the plane. I hope you enjoyed flying with us. Thank you. "
People began getting out of their seats, and collecting their luggage. Once my two new friends had all their bags, I stepped into the aisle and grabbed my suitcase from where I stored it in the overhead compartment, and followed the crowd off the plane.
Once I was inside the airport, I retrieved my cowgirl hat from inside my suitcase, and made my way towards the front entrance, and saw my daddy waiting for me next to the front counter. " Daddy! " I exclaimed, running towards him and dropping my suitcase handle as I got to him, so I could accept his hug.
After daddy's warm embrace, he looked down at me and said, " It's good to see you again, Lace. " I smiled at my nickname, and grabbed my suitcase handle, " Should we get going? I don't wanna miss out on any more than I already have. "
Once we got in daddy's truck and were on the highway, it was approximately a 45 minute drive back to our farm, and I spent that time staring out the window at the country sights I had missed, and talking to my daddy about my time in Panama City.
" Well darlin', sounds like you had a mighty good time stayin' with your aunt. " Daddy commented when I got done telling a story about how I learned to play volley ball on the beach with some friends I made. " So, " I asked, " what have I missed here? "
Daddy thought about my question, " Well, the peaches are just about ready to harvest, which will take a bit of work, since they've grown real good this season. And some crazy, drunk driver drove straight through the fence next to the cow's barn. "
" Hmmm, alright. " I replied. And as soon as daddy was done talking, we turned onto our long, gravel driveway, and I was happy to see everything looked the same, besides the peach trees, in the distance, were covered in almost-ripe peaches. " Eeee! " I squealed, " Oh, how I've missed this place! "
As soon as the truck began to slow down, I opened the door, and jumped out, ignoring the fact that the truck was still slowly moving. I threw my arms above my head and closed my eyes, just to feel the freedom of the refreshing wind that I had been dying to be a part of again.
