Chapter 3 - What's going on here?
So... because I tried to be enigmatic (something that I'm not, let's leave that pretty clear) I have to show Jade something amazing and I have no idea what! Well done Catarina, well done!!!
"Are we there yet?"
"Seriously can you stop asking me that, when we get there you will know!" and I really need time to figure out here I'm taking you, but that part I just couldn't say out loud.
As we keep walking we start to hear some whispers, or actually, I stat to hear some whispers, Jade is too mesmerized by the beautiful grey corridor that we are in to notice anything (please, note the sarcasm)
"Get in!"
"Why?" she asks me with questioning eyes. I guess that she is still oblivious to the fact that we are in a forbidden corridor and teachers are coming, and if I may add, teachers that don't know us, so let's just say that this is not the first impression that I want to give. Hey, I may hate the fact that I'm here, but at least I have to try and make the most of it!
"Just do as I say, no questions asked!" and even with me saying that she just stays there, with her arms crossed over her chest. Seriously! She hasn't figure out yet that we have to get the hell out of here! "Fast Watermelon, fast!"
That finally worked, but not in the way that I wanted... she just laughed at me and followed me inside the first room that I find
"... I think it might works. They seem as good as their résumé said they were" said one voice
"I don't know, I don't think that we can start making that kind of assumptions only based in what the other schools sent us. We have to see for ourselves. Is the only way" responded voice number two and he said something else but it was in such low tone that I couldn't catch it
"Very well then. In a week I want a report from both of you saying..." said yet another person and as they continue to walk away I couldn't hear anymore
What the hell were they talking about? Are they talking about us? A report? What is this all about? What's going on here?
"Well, that was close"
"Yeah!" I say while I let out my breath, that I didn't know I was holding "Let's just get out of here..."
"You bet" Jade follows me out. She seems as happy as me to leave, and as confused... But on the bright side I don't have to show her anything!
After we leave the corridor, we just walk side by side in silence till our room
"What as that all about?" she finally asks while sitting in my bed "I mean, what do they mean?"
"Believe me, I've been asking myself the same questions... It was something to do with us, that I'm sure... but more than that... I think we will have to wait to find out..." I pause, unsure if I should keep going "there is something here that is bothering me, but I can't put my finger on it, and this is not new... I've been having a feeling about his programme for a long time..."
"You think that there is something that they are hiding form us?" she asks with her eyes full of questions... "Really?" she says when I don't answer right away
"I don't know! But I intent to find out!"
***
"Hey! João! Wait a sec!" I found him... I've been looking for him for the past twenty minutes
"What's up?" he is smiling. How is that possible? We are about to go to our first class in our first day!
"Why the happy attitude?"
"The sun is shining, the birds are singing, people are running around with grumpy faces..."
"Very funny!" but I laugh anyway "But now seriously, I have something to tell you..." I say while he opens the door to our first class, and one of the few that we have together actually: English for non-first-speakers. Lame name, right...
"If this is about the way that I was looking at Jade yesterday I'm sorry" Why would he be sorry about that? "But I guess I couldn't resist... she is so different from everybody that I have ever known... Every girl back home is like you, you know... relatively short, brown hair, brown eyes, a little tanned..."
"Thank you, that just made my day, being called ordinary!" I fake a hurt expression, since I did know that I was just like everybody else that I know from Portugal... but thinking about it and having someone telling you are quite different things... maybe my hurt is not so fake "and just so you're information: I'm not short... I'm one sixth-two... which means that I'm average..." I add with a smile "But really you don't have to tell me that... I totally understand... She is different from what you are used... I understand that you look, everybody was..." and let's just say that I don't get why he feels like he owns me an explanation... really... why would he?
"Oh... Then what is it that you have to tell me..." he seems disappointed... Stange...
But before I can answer the teacher tell us to sit and he starts talking "Good Morning class. I'm Mr. Kelly and I'm your new English teacher." He takes a break to let that he just said sink in... why? I have no idea, it's not like his name is difficult to get, but he must have his reasons
"We will start by doing a small test just to see your knowledge, or lack of it, of this marvellous language" A test! Is this the kind of thing that will appear in the report that those voices were talking about? "Pick up a pencil and you may start. You have 30 minutes. Good Luck" I'm about to ask where are the questions when I see that I have a paper in front of me
"Odd isn't it... A test where you answer using pencil, all of multiple choice, and where you don't need a special sheet that you have to pay for" João whispers
"Yeah, very..." I smile and start going this stupid test
