"The 'broken' case?" I ask hesitantly.
"Your family was torn, ripped apart to the point to where it was unfixable. If your parents kept you or your brother even, it would've made matters worse, and put you in danger." The officer stated.
"You were born in Edenton, North Carolina. Your parents, your mother especially, didn't want another child. They didn't have money and were still so young. So they contacted your grandfather, your moms dad, and he decided to fly your family out here. The address on your file is wrong. You lived with your grandfather instead of next to him." The cop pauses and gets out of his chair. He goes to his file cabinet and pulls out a beige file labeled "Carter Case."
"But that's the story that was posed. Your parents brought you out here, not only because they didn't have money, but they were running. Running from something." He continued.
"What were they running from?" I ask him.
"Their past." He said nonchalantly. "Well your mother's past. Her ex husband was insane. He threatened to kill her, and its the time your mother was pregnant with their kid. So she ran and found your father who took her in."
"What happened to the kid?" I ask scrunching my eyes together.
The officer looked at me as if I was crazy and scoffed. "You mean Andrew? God knows where he ended-"
"Andrew?" I inquire quietly darting my eyes to the shut window. "Andrew isn't my full brother?" I ask astonished.
"No. Same mother different father. But when after your mother had you, they moved out here and her ex, Garrett, followed them. She knew it was best to give both of you up for adoption. She wrote a note attached to your bag and it said that she would come back for you when she knew it was safe."
"So my mother's ex husband killed her?" I ask.
"I mean it makes sense doesn't it? However we don't have hard evidence saying that, so we have to explore other options."
My heart was racing at a million beats per second. Every last puzzle piece fell into place and fit perfectly. The adoption was so quick because they knew. They knew that my mother was just waiting for the right time. And Andrew. He's so upset to have a baby because of what happened to him when he was little. And he didn't care about finding our father, because we didn't have the same father.
My eyes dart to his name plate that I just noticed was there and read the name. David Carter.
I get out of my chair and and swiftly walk out of the police station, however when I hit the concrete outside it turns into a run. I hear other policemen call after me, yet when I look back the officer I just talked, my dad, who was standing in front of the station in silence.
He was watching my run away. Just like how my mother did once.
