CHAPTER TWENTY FOUR
One name echoed in Lucifer's head as he entered the home of his little human.
The name of his best friend's murderer. Or so he thought.
Ethan.
********
I knew I was dead the minute I saw.
Yes, I saw. I saw everything. Callie kneeling beside my disfigured dead body, The pile of ashes that lay underneath the pile of clothes.
I saw it, in full color. Callie's black hair, cascading down on her back, a wicked smile on her delicate features as she stared down at my dead body.
Maybe I should've felt bad for myself. For the burns that reddened the skin on my face. For the broken arms, legs and ribs.
But it wasn't me. Not anymore.
It was just a shell. An empty shell.
A corpse like any other.
I stared around the room. There was a dent in the wall. Probably where the Demon has thrown me earlier.
There was no tunnel with a light at the far end. No Angels to welcome. Even Ethan wasn't there.
There was only Callie and the body.
But soon a third person joined them.
The door flung open and Lucifer entered the hallway then stormed into the living room. He stood a moment at the threshold, an undecipherable expression on his face. His gaze was wandering between my body and Callie.
"Invidia," he said simply.
She jumped to her feet and bowed.
Lucifer remained silent, standing there, staring at her. I noticed nothing special about him, until I saw his eyes.
There weren't mismatched anymore. Now, they were both the color of the midnight sky. So dark and deep, they seemed to have no bottom, no ending.
Callie flew backward and hit the wall. She didn't slide to the ground like I have earlier. She remained pinned to it, obviously unable to move.
Then he walked over to the body. He closed his eyes for a moment and just stood there, while the Demon stared at him and the body.
Then, he moved on to the pile of clothes. He bent down and posed one hand on the jacket. I disappeared.
Then he walked back to my body and lifted it gently.
"You'll pay for this," he said in the Demons direction, and then he looked straight at me. Not at the body, but at me, at my soul which was still floating above their heads.
"Come," he said.
It wasn't a demand, it was a command.
I felt a pull, as if there was a thread pulling me toward him, he extended his hand and soon I was wrapped in it, his palm blocking out the light. This was the moment I heard yet another voice.
"Lucifer," it growled. "What are you doing here?" It was Ethan's voice, low and furious. I never ever heard him so angry.
Lucifer didn't reply.
"I need you help," he said simply. "I can't bring her back on my own."
"What do you mean: 'bring her...'"
