Whitekit looked around, blinking groggily. His nose was immediately assaulted with many pungent scents. He was in a den whose walls were woven with long stalks of grass. A tree on one end created a sort of roof, creating shade for Whitekit. He noticed small dips in the ground that were filled with leaves beside a small stream. Where am I? He shuffled his paws together in front of him, trying to get up. But as he did so, a stab of pain shot though him. He screeched in agony, flopping back down on the small nest he laid on.
"Whitekit! You're awake!" Bubblepaw's face suddenly peeked in the den. It was bright and cheerful; the white speckled tom was usually like that. But his brow furrowed as he inspected Whitekit. "Did you try to get up?" Bubblepaw scolded. Whitekit looked at his paws. "Sorry..." The medicine cat apprentice snorted. "Don't be sorry for anyone but yourself. You opened your wound.." he sighed. "Hold still while I fix it." Bubblepaw began patting a wispy white substance onto Whitekit's side; cobwebs, he called it. Once he finished, he sat back and mewed, "Alright, Whitekit. You hurt yourself pretty bad. How in StarClan did you get out of camp and do this to yourself?"
Whitekit shifted his paws guiltily. "Well... I heard Rabbitfoot talking about how he had found rouge scents..." Bubblepaw nodded. "And then?" "So I followed them... While I was out, I saw..." He remembered with a flash how his mother had been with the rouges. He trembled, falling silent. Bubblepaw frowned. "Whitekit? Is everything okay? What did you see?" "I-I saw... U-um... C-can I see Boulderclaw, Mousekit, and Lilykit first?" "Not Woodslip?" "NO! U-um, I mean, n-no, just Boulderclaw, Mousekit, and Lilykit." "Okay, if you say so." Bubblepaw gave Whitekit one last strange look before heading out of the den.
Whitekit rested his muzzle on his paws. Woodslip's voice echoed in his head, making him sick. I'm sorry, Whitekit... I'm sorry, Whitekit... I'm sorry, Whitekit... He shuddered. "No... make it stop..." He growled to himself. "Make what stop?" a soft voice asked. Whitekit looked up. "Rosekit?" The shy she-kit was peering into the medicine cat den, her eyes wide. "Oh, thank StarClan!" she squeaked. "I was worried sick! After Dawnthoat found you lying in the forest, I... Oh, I don't know! I'm just so glad you're okay!" She raced over to him, and sniffed him all over. "You aren't too badly hurt, right?" Whitekit felt his fur grow warm. "N-no... Sheesh, Rosekit. Calm down!"
At that moment, Bubblepaw padded in with Lilykit and Mousekit. "Boulderclaw was on patrol," he explained. Whitekit's littermates were immediately circling around him, pushing Rosekit out of the way. "What did you see?" mewed Lilykit eagerly. "W-well, there was-" "Did you see the rouges? I bet he saw the rouges." Mousekit interrupted, his tail twitching. Whitekit sighed. "Please give me some space..."he muttered. As they did so, he begun telling them what happened. "...And then I heard some cats talking. One was... ah... Web? Yes, that's who it was. And there was also a... um... Hoot, I think. And there was also... There was... The other cat was..." He gulped. "It was... Woodslip!" Mousekit, Lilykit, and Rosekit gasped. Bubblepaw just nodded. "That explains it..." he murmured.
