Lilykit sighed. "How much longer untill our apprentice ceremony?" It had been nearly a moon since the invasion from the rouges. Woodslip still hadn't come back, and it was time for the kits' apprentice ceremony. Because Morningbird's litter had been born a few days before Woodslip's, they had waited a few days and were going to hold everyone's apprentice ceremony at once. It was the morning before, and all of the kits were restless.
"What if Silverearth decides I'm not good enough?" Tadpolekit fretted. What if he bans me to the elders' den for life?" "And what's so bad about that?" Mistyeye said, her eyes narrowed. "My eyesight may not be what it used to be, but my hearing's as good as ever!" "Um, I didn't mean that it'd be bad, I just... Uh..." Mistyeye snorted and padded into her den. "See?" Tadpolekit wailed. "This is why Silverearth might not make me an apprentice!" "Calm down Tadpolekit. Silverearth won't ban you from becoming a warrior just because of one grumpy elder," Sootkit said cooly.
"I just can't wait!" Mousekit mewed joyfully. "Me neither!" Lilykit exclaimed. "If only Woodslip were here to see it..." Whitekit sighed sadly."I know you feel bad about it Whitekit, but you have to let it go," Rosekit murmured softly. "Easy for you to say!" He snapped. "Your mom's still here!" "I know but–" "Just leave me alone will you?" "O-oh... Um, alright, if you want to be alone.." She murmured, padding away, her ears and tail low.
Just then, Silverearth padded into the grass-circle and called, "All cats old enough to navigate the grass-hills come to the grass-circle for a Clan meeting!" Bubblepaw padded over with Poppybreeze, and they sat down at the entrance in the medicine cats' seating place. Waterfrost, who was made deputy after Toadfoot's death, padded on the other side of the entrance in the deputy's spot. Redpaw padded into the clearing, his head high, Ravenpaw following him. Badgerpaw and Crowpaw padded in together, and Grasspaw padded in by himself. Whitekit noticed Wildheart and Acornstripe padding in together, and their tails were intertwined. As the other warriors padded in, Boulderclaw led them in, and sat down behind them, whispering words of encouragement.
Silverearth hopped up onto the meeting stump, cleared his throat, and said, "Tonight three apprentices are ready to become warriors. Grasspaw, Redpaw, and Ravenpaw, please step up." The three apprentices padded forward, bewildered. They very obviously hadn't been expecting it; or at least everyone but Redpaw. Silverearth cleared his throat. "I, Silverearth, leader of BrightClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Grasspaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" Grasspaw nodded solemnly. "I do." "Then by the powers of EarthClan, I give you your warrior name. Grasspaw, from this moment you will be known as Grassleg. EarthClan honors your calmness, and we welcome you as a full warrior of BrightClan. Redpaw, step forward."
As Redpaw padded up to the Clan leader, his chin high, Silverearth mewed, "I, Silverearth, leader of BrightClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. He has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend him to you as a warrior in his turn. Redpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" Redpaw blinked. "I will. And I'll do it better than anyone ever has!" Silverearth chuckled a bit, and responded, "Then by the powers of EarthClan, I give you your warrior name. Redpaw, from this moment you will be known as Redpelt. EarthClan honors your strength, and we welcome you as a full warrior of BrightClan. Ravenpaw, step forward."
The she-cat apprentice padded forward timidly, and Silver earth mewed, "I, Silverearth, leader of BrightClan, call upon my warrior ancestors to look down on this apprentice. She has trained hard to understand the ways of your noble code, and I commend her to you as a warrior in her turn. Ravenpaw, do you promise to uphold the warrior code and to protect and defend your Clan, even at the cost of your life?" Ravenpaw nodded, and raised her chin, responding, "I do." "Then by the powers of EarthClan, I give you your warrior name. Ravenpaw, from this moment you will be known as Ravenclaw. EarthClan honors your intelligence, and we welcome you as a full warrior of BrightClan.
"And now it is time for six kits' apprentice ceremonies. Whitekit, Mousekit, Lilykit, Tadpolekit, Sootkit, and Rosekit step forward." Once the kits did so, he looked at Tadpolekit and said, "Tadpolekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Tadpolepaw. Your mentor will be Oakwatcher. I hope he will pass down all he knows on to you."
Oakwatcher stepped forward as his name was called, and looked at the Silvereath proudly. "Oakwatcher, you are ready to take on an apprentice. You had received excellent training from Thistlesnow, and you have shown yourself to be courageous and bold. You will be the mentor of Tadpolepaw, and I expect you to pass on all you know to him."
Silvereath went on, making the other five kits apprentices too. Sootpaw's mentor became Dawnthroat, Rosepaw's mentor became Nightfern, Lilypaw's mentor became Rabbitfoot, and Mousepaw's mentor became Wildheart. Whitekit sat tall, eagerly awaiting who his mentor would be. "Whitekit, you have reached the age of six moons, and it is time for you to be apprenticed. From this day on, until you receive your warrior name, you will be known as Whitepaw. Your mentor will be me. I vow that I will pass down all I know on to you." He hopped down from the meeting stump. "That shall be all."
"Wow, Whitepaw! How'd you get Silverearth as a mentor?" Tadpolepaw gasped. "I-I'm not sure!" he stammered. "I have absolutely no idea!" "It's still amazing!" Lilypaw exclaimed. "I for one like my mentor," Mousepaw grumbled. "Wildheart is an amazing warrior." "I know, but having Silverearth is even cooler!" Lilypaw exclaimed. "Congratulations, Whitepaw," Rosepaw murmured. He blinked. Why is she so quiet? Eh, if she wants to tell me she will.
He padded over to his father, whose eyes were shining. "I'm very proud of you, Whitepaw, Lilypaw, Mousepaw." "Thanks, dad," Whitepaw mewed, his eyes sad. "I wish Woodslip could have seen it." "Me too, Whitepaw," Boulderclaw murmured. "Me too." "Hey, quit being all sad and mopey you guys!" Tadpolepaw said, exited. "I want to go explore the territory!" "Me too!" Lilypaw said. "Then let's go!" Mousepaw exclaimed. As they headed towards the exit to camp, Wildheart padded over to them. "Hey, remember your mentors take you on your first trip in the forest. You don't go by yourself." "O-oh. Right." Mousepaw mumbled. Dawnthroat padded over to them. "Don't worry, we'll go tomorrow, Mousepaw," the ginger tom laughed. His dark blue eyes sparkled as he added, "And I'm sure you'll love it."
Whitepaw looked over at Silverearth, sitting at the mouth of his den observing the cats welcome the new apprentices. Then the leader stood up. He padded over to them as he said, "There's still a good amount of time left in the day, why don't we go now?" Wildheart shook his head, his eyes wide, and replied, "Silverearth, there isn't enough time today to finish all of the grass-hills." "Alright, that's fine." Silverearth padded back to his den, and the cats remaining there stared in his wake.
