Storming down the busy streets of New York City, walking with a purpose is what I called it, I shoved my way past the wandering crowd of pedestrians.Getting home late was the last thing I needed. I could already see the dreadful look of disappointment on my bitter mother's face.
I had just received my most recent chemistry test and the results were anything but acceptable.Despite my passion for film directing, my parents believed my future was involved in engineering. So a bad test score meant I was going to end up homeless, they knew of the tough competition to get into a college that was challenging enough for me.
They even made sure I was the oldest in my class. My 18th birthday was a week after junior year ended, I never got to hang around kids closer to my age. And trust me, one year can make a whole difference. Not to mention I was trapped in a genius school, filled with nerds.
My parents did everything they could to help me achieve their dream, not giving a damn about my own. Although I lost that battle a long time ago. There's no use in arguing halfway through senior year, it just wasn't worth it. And I knew that. But apparently today my mind has changed.
I wanted to delay the argument I'd have between my parents and I later on, so I went around the back of the block and climbed up the sketchy fire escape. I gradually pulled my unlocked window up and stepped onto my vanity/desk, making as little noise as possible. Once I was fully inside my bedroom, I turned around to close my window shut and lock it.
I noticed I had left wet footprints all over my younger brothers homework I was helping him with last night.
"Mother fu-" I began to swear but was instantly cut off by my concerned mother.
"Y/N. What do you think you're doing?" I felt my heart jump twenty feet in the air, continuing to pound 20 times per second. Attempting to play it off cool, I put my hands on my hips and weakly smiled.
"What do you think you're doing?" I shifted my weight towards the right, and obnoxiously waited for a response. My mother crossed her arms and raised her eyebrows.Oh the shameful 'mom look'.
Everyone knew it. The look that sent chills down your spine and kept you up at night."Do you know how many rules you've already broken today?" She hissed. I began to remember all the things I've done wrong today. "One, you didn't wash the dishes this morning. Two, you came home through the fire escape.
Three, you ruined your brother's homework. Four, you gave me major attitude. And five, you failed your chemistry test." My eyes widened as I resigned to a more neutral position,
"How do you know about that?" I snapped. She held up her phone and pursed her lips.
"Your teacher emailed me. Oh and by the way, you're grounded for a week." My mother began to walk out of my room while I groaned. This happened every week, it hasn't stopped."It's not my fault I don't want the future my parents assigned me." I mumbled under my breath. I heard her footsteps come to a sudden stop, then they began to charge towards my door.
"We do everything for you! Everything! Why can't you be thankful for once?" She scolded as she pointed a finger at me. I felt cold tears forming in my eyes, but I fought the urge to cry.
"Because you won't listen! I have worked so damn hard at school and it's only getting worse! I'm not going to succeed in something I despise!" I stomped my foot on the ground and balled my fists. I could feel my nails breaking my skin, deepening the scars on the palms of my hands.
"Language Y/N. I'm not having this conversation for the millionth time. You're grounded for two weeks now, actions have consequences." My mother shook her head and slammed my door shut. Now I'll have to text my friend Elijah, explaining why I can't go see a movie on a Friday night.
