Skylar POV

I was awakened by my alarm going off. I hit the clock and rolled over.

"Skylar Amerie Wright! Get dressed for school!" My mother yelled.

I just put the pillow over my head in an attempt to drift back into my slumber. My mother then came into my room opening my dark drapes and hitting me on my butt causing me to jump.

" Maaaah" I groaned, hoping she'd go away but I knew she wouldn't.

"Come on, get up." she said pulling the covers off of me and walking over to my closet to get me an outfit to wear.

"Ooh, this is nice- No, I like this one." she said more to herself than me.

" Hey baby, which one do you like more?" she asked, holding up two sweaters.

"That one" I pointed at neither one of them in particular on purpose.

"Good choice, honeybun. Come on get dressed. I made breakfast. I'll be working late tonight so lock up when you get home and there's some spaghetti you can make later on when you get hungry."

"Ma, we were supposed to watch those old school movies together! Remember.. Foxy Brown, Coffee, Hell Up In Harlem?" I said in a melancholic tone.

She was always taking extra shifts and doing overtime to provide for us so I'm not sure why I'm acting as if this is a surprise.

"Oh baby, I know but you know I'm just--"

"Doing this for me and you to make sure that we have all that we need. Yea I know." I said finishing her sentence. I've heard this several times.

"I'm sorry baby. Hey, why don't you and Brandon watch them together ok?" she suggested.

I just continued to get ready for school, kind of over this whole conversation.

"Sky look, I know you want to spend more time together and so do I. Just give me some time to get everything situated and I promise I'll make a girls day just for me and you." My mother negotiated

"Yea ok ma, whatever you say." she looked at me defeated and kissed my cheek

" See you later baby" she said and left.

I felt a little bad. I don't mean to upset my mom but its just a little hard not knowing when I'll actually get to spend time with her.

I brushed the thought away and started getting ready to take a shower.

Once I got out of the shower, I quickly through my thickened hair in a messy ponytail. I put on a black and white reflective trimmed windbreaker outfit and my favorite dark purple Maybeline lipstick. I grabbed my phone and backpack and headed downstairs. I took a piece of bacon and a waffle from the dining room table. I swallowed the orange juice from the medium sized glass then placed the rest of the food from my plate in the fridge then headed out the door on my way school.

I was in my final year of High School closing out the first semester. I was ready to graduate but I was not in a rush to run off to college like my mom has planned out for me. She wants me to get a degree in nursing and be in a damn hospital all of my life just like her. But I'm not so sure that's for me. To be honest, I really don't know what I want to do with my life career wise, but I don't I have to have it all figured out so soon. I mean, I'm seventeen and I have so much ahead of me. Why rush into a career and waste away your golden years chasing a "higher education". Around here in Harlem, these streets have their own way of providing a curriculum that not even highest scholarship to the finest school could certify you in.
