Percy POV
Goode High School.
My old enemy.
It's not that I don't like school. It is that school doesn't like me. I would be fine if the school understood that I don't want to set it on fire or destroy some special part of it. But it doesn't. Because it doesn't have a brain. Because it is a building.
Okay, I need to go. All of this thinking is making me late for class and I don't need this on my second first day.
After mom and Paul got married, Paul convinced Goode to give me a second chance.
Hopefully, I don't accidentally set fire to the gym this time.
I run through the front door and down the hallway to my first period class, math.
I make it through the door just as the bell rings and hop in the seat closest to me. I'm panting slightly as I place my notebook in front of me and scan the room for anyone that I may know or looks like they are dumber than me. It's not nice but it is an old habit.
(time skippity dip dop)
The bell rings and I launch out of my chair to my next class. But first, my locker. I open it, shove my bag in, and slam it shut again. I can't be late again and science in down in a different wing of the school.
As I close my locker, I see a mane of blonde curls swish around a corner and my heart skips a beat. I don't know why but it can't be nothing. Right?
I walk down the halls that are quickly emptying and start to pick up my pace as I rush past each classroom. I jog through the door into science and take a seat in the second row.
"Excuse me, your stuff is taking my side of the table."
I look up and try not to gasp.
"Um, sorry," I quickly grab my stuff and slide it over to me, all while attempting not to stare.
She gracefully slides into the chair next to me and smiles at me. Gods, she is pretty.
I have to look away because the teacher came in and tells us to start taking notes for the lab we will be doing. It's rather simple, or so Mr. Johnson is saying. We will be testing the effects of heat on five substances. He says that we will be partnering with the person that we share our table with. So for me, the blonde beauty.
We get up and walk to the lab desks in the back. Every station has test tubes, a bunsen burner, matches and some other things that I don't recognize. The blonde girl starts to organize the chemicals and tubes in straight rows as I watch in wonder.
"Pew, pew!"
I look up and see a curly haired boy that somewhat resembles a Latino elf. He holds his bunsen burner as a gun and is fake shooting at me.
"Ah!" I yell back, pretending to be hit and clutching my stomach.
"Hey!" Mr. Johnson calls from room and the boy and I get down to our respective businesses.
The girl has finished organizing the things and is explaining what we need to do.
"... the copper carbonate in here and put it on the bunsen burner," she instructs and I try to follow her instructions.
"No, no!" she laughs. I love that sound already. "Not that."
She gently guides my hand around our station and whispers instructions in my ear.
By the end of class, I am sweating in weird places and hoping that she doesn't notice. We successfully heated everything and didn't set anything on fire like I had feared.
At the end of class, I realize that I haven't learned the pretty girl's name.
"Hey," I say to her as we leave. "I didn't catch your name."
She laughs again and replies, "Annabeth. Chase."
"Percy. Jackson."
"I'll see you around, okay?"
"Okay," I say.
She grins as she turns and walks back away. I stare after Annabeth as she makes her way down the hall. The crowd seems to part as she walks by.
I smile to myself as I walk to my next class.
