This short story was written by me for my English assignment, I don't really like it and I don't like vampires but we had to do it on Gothic Literature. Hope you like it. Tell me what you think:

                                                          When Blood Runs Red:

                                                                   By Caitlin Jones

The silent night was disturbed by the frantic panting below the tree tops. A high pitched scream sends the once sleeping birds fleeing like animals from a bush fire; a blue blur burst through the trees and bolts away from the beast that slowly emerges from behind; no rush needed from it, yet it still kept up with Antany.

She started to lose her breath trying to escape from the beast; turning the corner she realizes she was lost. The tall trees stood like guards trapping her in a prison of twisting and twirling branches. Every tree, shrub and plant looked the same. She stopped in her place and twirled around looking for a quick exit. Her hair cascaded around her face leaving a tangle of loose ringlets in her face, when she spots a small gap between a couple of shrubs. Not giving another minute to think, she started up her legs and ran over to her way out, but she had left it too late. A stick snapped from behind distracted her; she jerked her head to the side and sees the beast walking towards her. Legs turning to jelly she tripped over them and slammed to the ground; leaving her stunned from fright.

A snarl leaves the beasts mouth and made its way into Antany’s ears, sending shivers down her spine. She returned the sound with a whine; frozen she lay on the floor and waits for her fate. How could this happen to her?  She wasn’t ready for this; this wasn’t like her. Giving up wasn’t in her agenda. Propped up on her elbows she noticed the beast making its way over. Once it exited the shadows she noticed that in fact it was actually a man, a very tall masculine man.

Without thinking she called out to him in a shaky voice, “why are you doing this to me?” A wicked smile spread from ear to ear on his face, walking closer he didn’t answer. “Leave me alone,” she jumped up and ran to the gap she discovered earlier. The gustily wind however had shifted the shrub’s leaves while she lay on the ground. Her eyes searched high and low looking for it or even a new escape; panic set through her when she couldn’t find one. She could only think of one way to get out; up! Running to the closest tree near her, she began to climb the rigged trunk.

Her hands raw from the bark; warm red liquid leaked from them, leaving trails running downwards. The scent of the liquid floated through the air and straight to his nose. Nostrils flared; his favourite scent flowed through his body, his body shivered from such heroine. His fists clutched, muscles tensed; he took off flying towards her fragile body. His fast movement surprised her and sent her up the tree faster than a cat near water; by the time he was to the tree, she had managed to struggle half way up the old oak. His nose neared the tree, sniffing the blood; his tongue outstretched and licked the bark; the roughness didn’t damage his tongue. The blood in his mouth was hers’. His senses took over and sent him up the tree; jumping upwards, he grew closer towards his prey. His prey looked down and screeched; she scrambled up faster, but her feet kept slipping, breaking the small branches they rested on for a second.  Her left arm stretched out towards a twig – the only thing close to her. It snapped, catching her off balance and sent her crashing to the ground. Her back, legs and arms smashed into branches; she could hear them breaking. A crackling snap and the instant pain in her arm could only mean one thing; she cried out when she realized she had broken it.

Crash! She landed with a thud; the impact had winded her and left her paralysed. She looked above and saw his shadow drop to the floor. Her skin prickled; the dew on the grass so cold she begun to shiver; heavy shudders existed her body as sobs escaped her mouth. He landed gracefully like a cat and began to waltz over to her. Bending over next to her he looked down into her eyes. She gasped; they looked like the fiery depths of hell, only worse. His breath was icy against her bare skin; leaning in he smiled at her, showing off a pair off sharp teeth. Before she could react in anyway, he lunged forward and sunk them into her skin. He pulled away watching her; blood slowly tricked down her neck, a black liquid accompanied it, oozing out through two bite holes. Sensation rushed through her body, she gasped for air through seductive cries. Her pulse started to slow; her heart’s rhythm skipped beats; the pumping of her blood stopped. Her eyes rolled back; her chest lowered down and stopped moving; her last breath was taken. Everything stopped; the night fell silent once more; the tweets in the distant trees indicated that the birds had returned and were ready to sleep; the wind died down and the moon shone through the leaves above. He stood over her body and waited. Slowly her eyes begun to stir, shudder, then completely opened. Life had drained from her face; her heart did not pump; her teeth were in pain; no blood ran through her; she was dead, but still awake.
