Not to be a poet

It would be easier not to be a poet.

It would be a fine thing

to come home

watch TV,

untroubled,

mind blank like paper

without need for ink.

Much simpler not to have

a head so full of words

your brain hurts.

It would be good

to see a guy in a beanie

and not feel obliged

to find a metaphor for him.

No need to record,

transforn, or consider.

Just be in the world,

dumb and simple

like a badger or an owl

neither of which I've ever seen

but have read about

in poems.
