Chapter 1
The Beginning
I'm in Geometry now, which I get an A+ in, so I decide to start my list. I grab a random notebook and a pen, flip to a fresh page, and start writing. I
occasionally glace at the board so it looks like I'm taking notes on the lesson, even thought I don't need to.
Places I Can Find Out More About My Abilities:
1. Library (tried, failed)
2. Internet (tried, failed)
3. Comic book store
4. Comic book convention
I look at my list and decide to go into the library during lunch to look up local comic book stores and if there is any comic book conventions soon nearby. I
know comic books sound stupid, but that's the only mention I've ever heard of abilities like mine before! And besides, even if it fails, it was worth a shot.
***************
(Lunch time, in the library.)
I'm sitting at an ancient computer in my school's library, waiting and watching as the piece of dinosaur electronic coughs and sputters as it finally
comes to life. I click onto Internet Explorer, and go to Google and type in 'comic book stores in Flagstaff, Arizona' and wait for the results to load. And the
results are... 3 stores! I write down the names and addresses on the same page as my ideas of places to find info, and then search 'comic book
conventions in Arizona this month' it September, school started 2 weeks ago, but it's still blazing hot. I wait for the results to load again, and 1 result comes
up. It's in Phoenix, Arizona in a week. I wonder who will drive me. I know my grandpa can't and won't, and neither will my brother Chase, he's at college.
Hmm... I guess we'll just have to see about that, but I know I NEED to go, someway, somehow, I know I'll get there.

(After school, same day, riding her bike to Xtreme Comics in Flagstaff, Arizona)
I arrive at the storefront, and look in the windows to see shelves of comic books throughout the store, and a glass case filled with what I guessed
were rare comic books that needed to be locked away for safe keeping. I attach my red bike to a light pole with a chain and lock, and walk inside. I hold my
black messenger bag, which contains my notebook, a pen, my wallet, and a water bottle.
I immediately start browsing the shelves, reading the first of every issue of every comic book, finding out each time how they became a superhero
or super villain. They usually consist of science of experiments gone wrong, and the occasional extra-terrestrial substance that they encounter and that
changes them. I consider the possibility that I was exposed to dangerous chemicals while in my mother's womb; and also that my parents could've been
superheroes, I would never know, because I never even met them. They disappeared and left me with my Grandparents. But as soon as the thought occurs,
I disregard it, deeming it preposterous. My parents, superheroes? Yeah, right; keep thinking that and you will end up in the psyche ward Maggie, I think to
myself, scolding myself for my stupidity.
"What's the matter? Broke a nail?" says a masculine voice over my shoulder, and I turn quickly to face the person and respond "Hardly, I'm just
looking at comic books. Would a girly girl be in a comic book store?" I mean seriously, how stupid can this boy get?
Now that I look closer I see that he has caramel colored hair, with silver-gray eyes that are glittering with amusement. He has on a Superman
shirt, blue Nikes and straight leg, grey wash jeans on that bring out his eyes. He has tanned skin and a slightly muscled body. Not full-blow buff, but definitely
not scrawny. I look back up at his face as he says with a smirk "Now that you're done checking me out, I'm Douglas, but call me Dougie. And you are?" "I'm
Maggie. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go," "Not so fast Maggs! You just got here!" I ignore the nickname and respond, "Well, I'm just going to by a few
comic books and then I'm leaving." "Mind If I join you? I could help you pick out some good ones! And maybe a few classics too, you seem like a newbie." he
replies as I say begrudgingly, "I guess so, but hurry up! I need to go soon." "Okay, calm down. I know this store inside and out. We'll be done in probably 15
minutes." "Alright let's get this done."
15 minutes later, as promised, we're done. I am stocked with classics, and some of Dougie's favorites. I pay for my comic books and am about
to leave when I hear Dougie say "Wait up!" I turn around and wait for him to catch up, and he arrives with a piece of paper in hand and says, "Here's my
number in case you need any more advice. See you around Maggie!" He says while waving, running back toward the comic book store. I get out my list, cross
of comic book store, since I won't need to go to any others, and get on my bike and ride home, feeling lucky that I met someone who knew so much about
comics.
