On the river
we slept most the day.
On the river we saw the sky turn gray.
On the river you couldn't see twenty yards,
an effect of one of the meanest things, fog.
On the river
we saw a light away down the shore,
it was the raft and we were mighty glad to get aboard.
On the river
we didn't say a word,
just listened to the sounds of the rest of the world.
On the river
me and Jim
finding our own freedom
beginning as friends.
