"I asked her not to wear it. You know how she loses things a lot," Chance said before I could answer and chuckled breezily.
"Oh, is that right, Anna?" Mom said, giving me a look.
I nodded almost mechanically and smiled.
"Oh, alright," Dad said and leaned back in his chair.
I looked at Chance as he gave me a quick glance. What was his angle? Why'd he save me?
"So aren't you going to tell us about you ditching class, Nie?" Chance said before raising his spoon.
"Silly me, we changed the conversation," Mom said after giggling to herself.
"Oh, that. It was no big deal really. I was just lazy to go to class. And seeing as I had the chance to watch the advanced screening of The Hunger Games, I couldn't pass it up," I said and looked at the mushrooms floating in my soup bowl.
"Kinda vague of an explanation, don't you think?" Chance said without turning or glancing at me.
"Okay, fine. I was lazy. And Seth saw me outside, we talked. I told him I was too lazy to go to class, he told me he had passes to the screening. We went to his car, I hid in the back while he talked to the school guards and went out front after. We pulled up at this convenient store, and he had a change of clothes. I changed, and he did, too," I said and almost laughed before continuing, "Then we drove to the cinema, watched it and went home. When he was driving me back, Jamie called. Asked me where I was, bla bla, then I got home. The end," I said and finally looked up.
"That's it?" Mom said and glanced at Dad, then Chance.
"Umm. Yeah. Why?" I said and tapped my fingers on the wooden table.
"Well, as much as I disapprove of laziness and ditching school, I knew the pressure would get to you sometime," Dad said and nodded.
"And your Dad and I have talked about it for a while," Mom said and smiled.
"Ummmm. What did you talk about?" I said and tilted my head to the side.
"We may or may not have planned for you to go out of the country for a while after your graduation two weeks from now," Mom said and smiled at Dad.
"What?" I said, keeping my voice in check as my jaw dropped.
"We thought of going with you, but we thought it best to leave you to it. That way, you can go where you want and relax for a while," Dad said and beamed at me.
"So you're sending her off after graduation?" Chance said in a creepy monotone voice.
"We're sending both of you," Mom said and clapped her hands, smiling really big.
Just then, the door opened, and our food was served quietly before we continued talking.
"What did you mean both of us, Mom?" I said after the door closed.
"Well, both of you...." Mom said, her tone confused.
"Don't you want to go, Anna, Chance?" Dad said while raising his eyebrows.
"Umm.. Of course, I was just surprised is all," I said and then grinned, hoping it didn't look too fake.
"That sounds great, Uncle. But where did you have in mind?" Chance said.
