"Leda, dinner's ready!" My step-mom called up to me from the kichen.
"Coming!" I yelled back, getting up from my bed and heading down to the dining area.
I sat down with a plate of mashed potatoes and roast beef. My little sister, Annie was sitting next to me. She's 4 years old and I'm 14. My mom had her when I was 10. We don't talk to our mom anymore. We were taken away from her right after Annie was born. She was on a lot of drugs and she was a prostitiute. We weren't treated fairly in that house.
"So, how was your day, girls?" My father asked, sitting down next to Annie.
"Great! I got the character kindness award in preschool!" Annie chimed.
My father and I smiled at her. Annie was the kind of kid who could get anyone to smile. She had dirty blonde hair that was perfectly straight and she always had it in pigtails. She loved pink skirts and jewlery. Her skin was a little tan, which she had gotten from our mother. I, on the other hand, was very pale thanks to my father. And my hair was more blonde than Annie's was. Luckily, my hair was just as straight though. Annie and I both shared our mother's green eyes and her short height.
Loretta, my step-mom sat down next to me. She has red hair that flows in pretty curls onto her pale back and hazel eyes that seem to always fill with hate when she sees Annie or myself. She wants our dad's attention and she usually wins it anyway, but yet, she still wants more. I hate that bitch.
"Mike, I was wondering if you wanted to go out to dinner tomorrow night?" Loretta asked my father.
"Uhhh I would but whose gonna watch the girls?"
"The girls are old enought to watch themselves." She told him.
"Maybe we want some time with our father." I butt in, my voice rude and pushy.
"Leda, deer, I can handle this." My dad said, calmly. This happened a lot.
"Fine, but guess whose sleeping on the couch tonight?" Loretta said, getting up from the table and storming in her and my dad's room.
I knew she meant my dad but secretly I was sorta wondering if she meant me.
"Leda, why must you do that?" My dad asked, looking like he wanted to cry. Loretta was so horrible to the poor man.
"I'm sorry daddy......" I almost whispered, staring down at my half-way eaten plate.
He sighed.
"It's alright, but I wish you would treat Loretta with some respect. She's my wife and I love her."
"I don't see why." I muttered.
"You'll understand when your older." My father replied. He stood up and left the room. I really didn't know where he was going, considering Loretta kicked him out of their room.
"Leda.........." Annie whispered, looking close to tears.
"Yeah baby?" I answered.
"I don't like Loretta..........."
"Me either, Annie. Me either."
