Carmen

After a month of being here, Diri came up to me. "I wanna go with yu," she said in her tiny voice.

“You can’t come.”

“Why not,” she asked without pouting or complaining.

“If we get caught, the guards will kill us.”

“Oh,” she sounded sad, “I don’t want yu tu die.”

I smile and ruffle her hair, Penelope cut it tu her chin yesterday so it won’t get in her way. “I aint ganna die,” I kiss her on her forehead then I head out with Bibi, Sam, and Taynan. We don’t always steel stuff, sometimes the villages people give us stuff while the guard’s aint looking, and we never steal from the towns peopl. A couple of the villagers used to be us, so once every couple weeks they give things they stored for us. Penelope and Boss wear du only ones who stayed to help us thou, even though both of dem are over eighteen, which is working age.

It’s unreasonable because most people can work well at du age of 13, but the royals here are corrupt like turners are blood thirsty. So no kid could work, and there no orphanage, and if yu wanna leave du town yu have tu pay a toll or yu have tu face du turners and neither was possible for orphan children. So we gadda do what we can tu survive.

Travelers, guards, and royals are du targets tu steel from. We practice on each other before stealing on du streets, if get caught yu dead so we practice a lot before comen out here. We walk naturally, Bibi and Sam have a little act wear they act like them playing tag or somthen and they run into a few people while doen it and pick pocket from them. My job tu day was tu make du rounds with du villagers and take du stuff they give me, while Tynan was aiming for guards and royals, since they wear most dangers tu steel from.

Dirina

I wait for Carmen tu come back. It feel like long time since he go. “They won’t be back for a while.”

“Penenope, I want tu go.”

“It’s tu dangers for yu tu go,” she smile at me. “yu wanna help me with du food?”

“Os kay,” I say and follow ’er.

She make lots a food for all. “What I have tu do tu go with Caren.”

“You have tu practice a lot,” She say. “Tomorrow I’ll have Carmen and Tynan teach yu.” I smile and help ’er with du food.”

The next day Penelope had me and Tynan teach Diri how to pick pocket. She was a fast study, in one day, she could pick pocket with only maken a mistake about once every five times. The next few days, I told her to pick pocket form Penelope, Boss, Tynan, and Erick; they wear du four oldest, and who people practiced on ’cause they had the best experience in detecting pickpockets. At the end of each day she showed what she successfully pickpocketed. Boss seemed mad, but I knew it wasn’t at Diri, he said so himself, he was mad that he not notice her take so many things from him.

Besides learning how tu steal she also learned tu run and basic self-defense, not that a four year old could do much without surprise on her side. I had suspicion that she only killed that turner ’cause she made uh mistake. Three passed since Dirina wanted tu go with us, and tuday she got her wish. Though boss said, she wasn’t allowed to steel anything, but she had tu get the lay of du town and see how it was done when lives wear on du line.

We went in du town, it was a quiet day, there was no one passen thru, so that just ment, royals, guards, and what du towns people give. Again I was placed on towns people, Penelope said it ’cause I had Dirina with me.

Watching things through the little girls mind was and interesting thing. Since that day my last host died I found that I could not reside back into unconsciousness for fear the little hostess would find herself in need of my assistance again. Today she was learning the town, so that she could steel form the royals and guards. I watched thru her eyes, and I was amazed at what she saw. Three groups of thieves came out here. the group of five my host was in, they are the “retrievers” they get the items, then there’s a group of three people the “passers,” if one of them passed by and a retriever had something then the passers would take it, and deliver it to the last group, which also had three called the “end” and they would take it back to camp.

Dirina had keen eyes and noticed, that to make sure that items did not stay in anyone’s hands too long, that sometimes retriever would hand to another retriever, or directly to an end, or an end would pass to another end, or passer to another passer. In the end an item could get passed around several times. Yet the little hostess saw it all and processed it well. Even though she wasn’t smart enough to get out of danger, she is a smart girl.

Carmen handed a blanket to the little host “take it to a passer,” he told her. I could sense him watching her as she walked away from him. To my surprise she did not head strait to a passer, instead so walked and stopped at a stand that had trinkets. She stopped and looked quietly without looking. She tensed as someone walked by, that’s when I reliesed the guard, as I said she was a smart girl. Walking strait to one of the passers would look suspicions to the guard. She looked at the guard processing wear his attention was. When Dirina figured it was safe enough she walked to a passer and handed off the blanket. Then she zigzagged through the commoners, if I was to watch her from the outside I would probably lose her, and that’s what she wanted. She ended up back to Carmen who had a smile on his face.

“You’re a natural.”

I had to agree, this girl had a survival instinct to live in a thieves world.
