“I think someone had been here, Alexandra...” Brad softly murmured as he studied the loose earth under his feet.

He looked at Alexandra. She was busy studying the place. They were in the Japanese Cemetery tonight, off for their fourth mission. It was another treasure. An ancient compass made of gold and adorned with diamonds.

They decided to go to the next location after securing the compass.

They looked for the clue that was written on the Haiku. They just sneaked in the place. The cemetery was a historical landmark in the city and it was a protected site.

Palinga-linga siya sa paligid. He didn’t feel safe.

“Alex...”

“Please stop talking, Brad. You’re ruining my concentration.” Wika nito sa kanya na hindi lumilingon.

He pursed his lips. He knew that Alexandra was trying to solve the clue in the haiku. May direksiyon itong tila sinusunod. He wanted to help her but he felt the need to be a lookout instead. They had been really doing well as partners.

Alexandra took around fifty steps to the East from the big rock. She had a small shovel in her hand that she used to dig a hole in the ground.

He saw excitement in her eyes. He was excited, too. The box was approximately twelve inches in length and six inches wide. It was securely locked.

They didn’t know what was inside of it yet. They still had to open it but they will know later.

“Alexandra, dapa!” He shouted as he pulled her down.

A gun shot tore the stillness of the night before her body fell on the ground. He abruptly pulled the gun that was inserted in his waist and shot the gun man. The man fell on the ground. Alam niyang napuruhan niya ito. But more men appeared from the darkness. And he knew that they needed to escape.

“Alexandra, let’s go! We have to get out of here!” Hindi niya pinapakawalan ang braso nito. They ran for covers as bullets chased their backs.

Alexandra was fully armed too. He knew they hit a couple of people but it seemed that they were a handful. He was holding her hand.

The shots resumed and they tried their best to avoid the bullets. They had to go back to his car and drive away.

They ran as fast as he could to his volvo. “Get inside the car quick!” He shouted at Alexandra and immediately went to the driver’s seat.

His volvo screeched on the road and zoomed in the darkness.

“Shit!” He cursed as he maneuvered the car to run even faster. They were firing at their back and he tried to swerve the car to avoid the bullets. He was silently praying that the bastards wouldn’t hit the tires of his car.

“Kumapit ka nang maigi, Alex,” he said without looking at her. His eyes were focused on the road.

“I think they’re gone now, Brad.” Si Alexandra na kumuha sa atensiyon niya.

He slowed down and gave her a glance. “You’re shot!” He exclaimed with voice full of worry.

Despite the wound that she sustained, she looked calm and composed. “Daplis lang ito, Brad. No need to freak out.” Pabalewalang sagot nito.

“I’ll bring you to the hospital,” he quipped and calculated in his mind the nearest hospital from their location. But they have to go back.

“There’s no need to bring me to the hospital, Brad. Daplis lang ito. This can be treated without the help of a doctor.”

“Are you sure with that?” Medyo doubtful na tanong niya. Ayaw niyang isugal ang kaligtasan nito. He wanted to bring her to the hospital if he should.

“I’m okay, Brad,” matatag na sagot ng babae. “I can manage. Just bring me to a safe place where we can treat my wound.”

He heaved a sigh. “Okay...” If that was what she wanted, fine. He was just hoping that she really had a minor injury and that it wasn’t life threatening at all.

He had a cabin-type house there. And it was safe.
