Chapter 1 - Oblivious
The summer breeze blowing through the window felt soothing against my skin, my hair was sticking up all over the place as me and my little sister were driving to our cabin in the woods. The music was loud as me and Katie were singing along to our favourite song, we were singing the wrong lyrics, but we didn't care.
We pulled up at the cabin just in time as my brother, Riley, was making his way inside. After our mom passed away about five years ago, we were left on our own, our dad abandoned us and took the house with him. We were left with nothing other than the clothes we were wearing that day. So Riley my older brother had to care for us, we built our cabin and have lived here for five years.
I had barely stopped the car when Katie jumped out the door and ran inside, for a thirteen year old girl she still got exited whenever we came back from the city. I couldn't help but laugh at her.
I opened the trunk of my car, and grabbed the bags of food and headed towards the kitchen.
After I put the groceries away, I headed towards Katie's room. I knocked on her door, when I didn't get an answer, I turned the handle and walked in to find her asleep on her bed. She had the biggest smile on her face and that was when I knew she was faking it.
I laughed at her, and walked towards her, when I was close enough I tickled her, she started laughing and screaming begging me to stop.
I grabbed her hand and shuffled her so she was on my lap instead. She was wriggling around trying to get comfortable before she started to mess up my hair, I smiled and started tickling her again, she giggled until I started messing up her hair.
"aww come on Jake, it took me ages to do my hair!" Katie never made the effort with her hair it was always straightened and was always pulled into a high ponytail. Except today Katie did it extra special because we were going to the city. My opinion was that it didn't matter how she looked but to her, looks were everything when it came to the city.
Katie was still trying to get me to stop messing with her hair, just to make her even more angry I grabbed the glass of water beside her bed and poured it on her head. Before she got a chance to hit me, I jumped off of the bed and ran out of the room laughing. I could here her screaming and shouting that she would get me back for this.
I had just gotten out of the shower when I heard Riley yelling out for me. I didn't know what he wanted, and I didn't really care either, so I took my time getting dressed. Once I put on some jeans I walked downstairs towards Riley.
He was still calling out for me, when I got to the door to his room, I noticed him sitting on his bed. He had set up his xbox360 and was playing COD -call of duty- he looked pissed, so I stood at the doorway laughing.
He looked away from the screen and met my gaze, he was frowning and I soon realised that laughing was probably the wrong thing to do.
I couldn't help but smirk at the look he was giving me. His frown deepened and he was staring at me with cold eye's. "what took you so long?! I have been calling for you for at least twenty minutes. When I call for you I expect you to answer me!" his face told me he was not joking.
I shrugged and grabbed the other controller from his desk and sat on the bed.
Riley was not happy, but he didn't stop me from joining his game.
"what's up?" was all I had to say before Riley started yelling at me. He was yelling at me for throwing water on Katie.
I couldn't help but laugh the whole time he tried being serious, in the end he ended up giving in to a few small chuckles here and there. We both knew he didn't care about what I did to Katie, whatever I did it was always a joke and she took things really badly.
One time I was mucking around with her outside, and she was running around near the lake, she accidentally slipped and hit her head on a log and said I had pushed her over. I ended getting in a lot of trouble for something that never happened.
After a few hours on the xbox I headed for Katie's bedroom to check on her, her door was open so I guessed she was in bed.
Either way I walked in her room and over to her, she was sleeping peacefully on the left side of her bed.
I decided to sit next to her, as soon as I got under the covers she rolled over and stared at me. Instead of yelling at me, she wriggled closer to me and once again fell asleep.
I didn't want to wake her up so I ended up falling asleep with her in my arms. After all she was the closest person I had to family.
