It had been a long week for Carlos, stress, homework, practices.
It also didn't help that he started having nightmares of his mother again.
Sadly, Jay didn't usually hear his boyfriend have a nightmare, he was a heavy sleeper and Carlos never woke up shouting over moving around a lot.
Plus, Carlos was pretty good at keeping quiet, which wasn't that good of a thing in this situation.
Luckily, Jay wasn't sleeping that well that night, and he caught the soft sniffling coming from next to him.
Carlos had moved back to his bed, rubbing puffy eyes and sniffling, trying to hold back obvious tears.
Jay sat up, wordlessly holding his hand out to the smaller boy, pulling him into his lap and speaking softly, voice low and still full of sleep as he tried to calm Carlos down, telling him that it was okay if he wanted to cry.
Fifteen minute later, Carlos' breathing had evened out, but his eyes were still red and puffy, a frown etched on his face.
Jay didn't like seeing his boyfriend frowning, it was rare for Carlos to frown.
"Hey, think you could give me a smile?"
Carlos rubbed his eyes, shaking his head a little as he rested it against Jays shoulder.
He couldn't frown for too long though, because Jay started tickling him after he didn't smile.
The air was soon filled with laughter, the mood shifting to a lighter one instead of the heavy, tenser one from earlier.
After a small tickle war, which Carlos lost as usual, the two laid together, cuddled in the middle of Jay's bed.
The two fell asleep shortly after, Jay's arms wrapped around Carlos, almost an unspoken promise that Jay would keep him safe.
