Carlos sat up against his bed in his pajama's with his laptop on his lap and Dude lying against him, resting his head on Carlos's knee, while he was working a few of his non-school-related projects before bed. Jay was in the bathroom brushing his teeth, they had already said goodnight to Mal and Evie to avoid them from being late for curfew.
Jay spit out the remaining toothpaste and rinsed when there was a knock at the door. "I got it." Jay said as Carlos began to rise to open the door. Carlos sat back down. "It's probably the girls, maybe they forgot something." Jay reached to the door knob and turned it to open, "Look who finally learned how to-"
It wasn't Mal or Evie, but three adults. "Good evening." Said one of the two men, he looked like a man with a mission, not a good one.
"Who is it?" Carlos said standing up and coming up from behind Jay to look around his shoulder.
"Some teachers."
"We're from the disciplinary committee, may we come in?" said the one woman, she, like the last man also looked very official and not at all pleased. She pushed the door open a little and let herself in, along with the other two men.
They both could sense that they weren't here this late for a something good. They both tensed up as worry began to build up. "How can we help you?" Jay asked trying to remember the manners he recently learned.
"Is something the matter?" Carlos added half-closing the door.
"There's no going around this." the second man said uneasily.
The woman picked up, "But it's come to our attention recently that Dude may be in a dangerous situation."
Dude came up to them upon hearing his name and licked Carlos's fingers, "Dangerous?" Carlos said running his fingers through Dude's fur, "What do you mean?"
"Well, we've heard from an anonymous source that he may be in danger because of you."
Carlos felt his heart skip a beat, "Me?" He swallowed.
"What are you guys saying? We love him and he loves us, why would anyone even be stupid enough to think that?" Jay interjected coming to Carlos's other side.
The first man cut in, "Given your background," He said towards Carlos, "We want to be safe."
"His background," Jay repeated, Carlos seemed too worried to even try to speak up for himself, so Jay would do it for him. "so it's because his mother is Cruella de'Vil. You're just going to assume he's going to skin the dog. What do you know about him other than that?" Jay was getting angry, he could feel it.
"If you don't lower your tone we'll have to punish you for disrespect towards a superior." The woman said. Jay stepped down a little. "We're not saying that he is his mother."
"But for now we'd prefer it if Dude was in a more secure situation." The other of the men added.
"You're taking him away?" Carlos finally said.
"For now yes."
The first man walked forward and reached out to pick up the dog. "No don't!" Carlos said putting himself in between them. "You can't take him."
"Yes we can," the woman said, "Now Mr. de'Vil, please."
Jay saw the tears filling up in Carlos's eyes. This was seriously not happening right now, but they couldn't fight back against the teachers. "Please miss." Jay said urgently, "Can't we just do this tomorrow?" he was hoping to buy some more time.
"No we cannot," She said. "We're taking the dog and that's final, we can do this the easy way or the hard way." This woman was actually threatening him.
Jay thought about it, she was being vague but the 'hard way' didn't sound as though it was going to be good, especially for people like him and Carlos. He knew what the safest thing to do was even if it wasn't the right thing. "Carlos" He said gently, going back up to him and placing both his hands on his shoulders. "There's nothing we can do."
Carlos looked up to him frantically, "This isn't fair they can't do this." His eyes was heartbroken and on the verge of tears. "It's not fair." his voice waivered.
Jay felt so angry and broken, how could they do this, it really wasn't fair, but what else could he do. "I'm so sorry" he whispered.
The man went around them and picked up Dude, with a bit of a struggle, mainly because Dude didn't seem to want to go either. "Goodnight boys, and thank you for your cooperation" The woman said coldly. Carlos couldn't bear look at them; he looked down with his back to turned, facing Jay, Jay glared while they closed the door behind themselves. "We'll be in touch." And just like that they were gone.
The both stood in silence. Heavy tears fell from Carlos's eyes and to the carpet. He still hadn't looked up.
Carlos sniffled and took in a shaky breath. "It's okay to cry." Jay said softly.
Carlos flung his arms around Jay's waist, and buried his face into Jay's shirt. "How could you let them take him?" Sobbed, choking out heaving breaths. "It's not fair."
Jay held him close and let him cry, he hushed him, whispering that it would be okay. Carlos just ended up crying harder but Jay couldn't find any tears in himself. Maybe that was a good thing. After some time, Jay led the trembling Carlos to his bed, and helped him lie down; sitting on the edge Jay rubbed his back to try and comfort him some.
Once Carlos calmed down a bit, he gulped in a few heavy breaths to try and talk, "You-your shirt," Carlos said reaching out towards the stains from the tears and snot, "I ruined it."
Jay took his hand, "No you didn't" he said coolly. Jay got up and filled a cup of water and brought it to Carlos. "Here" Carlos sat up and took a few sips, "Better?"
Carlos nodded; he wiped his face in his sheets, and said looking at the sheet in his hand "I probably look like a mess."
"No more than usual."
Carlos let out a weak forced laugh, and lied back down. "I just want Dude back."
"I know" Jay said pushing back some of Carlos's hair. "You'll get him back, even if I have to steal him myself."
Carlos rolled onto his side, "I thought you swore off stealing"
"I think this is an extenuating circumstance."
Carlos smiled in agreement, Jay always had his back whenever he needed him, actually even when he didn't. Carlos felt a small wave of fatigue from the crying.
Jay seemed to sense it. "It's getting late, and we have school tomorrow, did you want to try sleeping?" Jay doubted after what had happened in the last 45 minutes that either of them would be able to go to sleep, but it wouldn't hurt to try. And Carlos seemed to agree. Carlos buried himself under the covers and Jay shutoff the main light, "Did you want to keep the lamp on?" Jay asked, Carlos liked to sleep with it on but it bothered Jay, so they usually took turns unless one or the other slept first, then the one who stayed up the latest got their way. Carlos nodded so Jay left it alone and went to his own bed.
They both lay in silence for a good 40 minutes, both trying but not able to sleep. Carlos's eyes stung when they closed. The sting reminded him of why he had cried. This was so messed up. How could they even think that of him, all because his mother tried to skin 99 puppies they assume that by default that he'd follow in her footsteps? Even when she wasn't there she still ruined things for him. Carlos tried to push those thoughts back. He rolled onto his stomach. His sheets and pillows smelt like Dude, the bed felt empty without him.
Carlos could feel tears prick up in his eyes. He didn't want Jay to see him cry again. But it was too much, what if he wasn't going to be able to see dude again, this was his dog, the first dog he'd ever met. He buried his face into the pillow, with his back facing Jay. He tried to steady his breathing. A few tears slipped out. He took in a calming deep inhale, but the exhale that came out was nasally, broken, raspy and shuttered. Hopefully it wasn't too loud for Jay to hear.
But it was. Jay noticed, he peered over at Carlos's bed. "You okay?" he asked. The lump in the blanket moved, in what he took as a nod but not a believable one. "Carlos?" Jay propped himself up on his elbow.
Carlos choked out another sob that he tried to suppress unsuccessfully. He moved to lie on his back and wiped the tears from his eyes. "Sorry" He said when he was steady once again, "It's just weird to not have dude with me. I'm too used to having him sleep with me."
Jay sat up and looked to Carlos who was covering his eyes under his arm. If he didn't want to sleep alone, then he wasn't going to sleep alone. Jay picked up his pillow and blanket and put it at the foot end of Carlos's bed.
"What are you doing?" Carlos said looking up at Jay.
"Sleeping in your bed," He said casually, "that is if you want me to of course." Carlos said nothing but scooted over to give Jay some room. He climbed in under his cover. They were positioned so that Jay's feet were near Carlos's head and vice versa.
They lay together awkwardly, but that didn't mean it wasn't unwelcomed. "Thank-you," Carlos said after a while, "Sorry for being such a baby about everything. For an ex- petty thief you're pretty generous." He added to lighten the mood.
"Shut up." Jay said kicking him. He stretched his hands over and behind his head. "Now go to sleep. We'll get Dude back tomorrow."
Finally after over an hour or trying, they both drifted into uncomfortable, restless sleeps.
Jay awoke the next morning to the sound of their alarm dragging him out of his sleep. Jay opened his eyes and to gain some baring of his surrounding and then closed them once again. That was when he realized it.
Jay's eyes opened and he looked down at the weight bearing down on his chest, it was Carlos. He must have changed ends during the night. Carlos's head was rested near the top of his chest, with one of his arms splayed across the middle of his chest. Jay had one arm loosely around his waist to hold him, their legs were tangled together. He could hear him snoring softly; all the crying from last night seemed to have clogged his sinuses. Jay felt a warm, relaxing ball of emotions. He hardly wanted to get up; feeling the rise and fall of Carlos's chest against his was almost blissful. The alarm kept blaring, Carlos didn't seem to notice, but Jay knew it meant he had to go shut it off. Jay carefully forced himself off the bed and out of Carlos's embrace. Jay felt a bitter empty cold once he was a out of the bed. Carlos tossed and turned, looking for a comfortable position which only took seconds. Unfortunately it was pointless because he was going to be awoken right after Jay shut the alarm off anyways.
"Carlos, dude," Jay said shaking his shoulder, "Wake up."
Carlos moaned and turned over, cocooning himself in the nest of blankets. "Five more minutes" He groaned.
"Come on, the faster we get ready the faster we can go meet up with Mal and Evie to discuss our attack plan for getting Dude back." He coaxed. It worked seeing how Carlos sat up, wearing the blanket as a cloak, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "I'm going to get dressed," Jay said picking up clean clothes off the floor and going to the bathroom to change. "And don't go back to sleep." Jay could hear the muffled thump of Carlos dropping down onto the bed anyways.
As he changed Jay thought about how they had woken up just a few minutes ago. Carlos didn't seem to have noticed it. But he couldn't stop thinking about it. They'd always been close, and there was no doubt of a platonic relationship between them, but he'd never felt for him the way he did right now. There were no words for the feeling that he could think of, it was a warm, mushy, fuzzy mess; but at the same time he couldn't stop thinking about it. When he really thought about it, it was the same feeling he had been getting when they did practically anything together and for each other for a while after they met but amplified; much more amplified.
"Jay" Carlos pounded against the door, interrupting his thoughts, "hurry up."
He hadn't even heard him get out of bed. Jay dismissed his mindless drabbles, hurriedly snapped the buttons on his favorite leather vest and got out to let Carlos in. "All yours" he said passing by him.
They finally got ready and left their room and went to breakfast to meet up with the rest of their friends.
"Hey guys," they spotted Evie waving to them to get their attention. "Over here."
Carlos pointed her out to Jay and led the way to the table where she, Mal, Ben and Doug all sat together. They put down their trays and settled in.
"You guys were late today." Mal said, spreading butter on her English muffin. "Long night?" she asked, seeing Jay resting his cheek in one hand and lazily eating cereal.
Carlos looked down at his plate, avoiding eye contact. The silence between Jay and Carlos combined was answer enough. "Did something happen?" Evie asked sensing the tension. Jay looked at Carlos, not sure whether or not he'd be willing to talk about it.
"People from the disciplinary committee came by last night." Jay said; everyone else but Carlos perked up.
"And they took Dude away." Carlos finished.
"What?" Mal said.
"Why?" Doug asked.
"My mother" He responded sounding more frustrated than hurt, "They think I'm a danger to him."
"That makes no sense." Mal said "Can't you do something?" She asked Ben.
"I don't know. But I can try" Ben said, he turned to Carlos.
