Amelia Price is ten years old, running alongside the pool with her older brother, Daniel. Their parents busy themselves with the barbecue, the smell of meat patties wafting throughout their backyard and melting in with the clammy summer air. Their mother, Aurora, takes a second to run inside to retrieve the forgotten condiments basket, while their father, Stephen, focuses on transferring the grilled patties to a plate. Meanwhile, the two children are having a competition to see who can do the best tricks in the pool.
"Lia, watch this!", Daniel hollers, his scrawny arms grabbing onto a plastic slide, which he drags to the edge of the pool. He climbs to the top, catching his sister's attention. Her lips part in worry, even though the slide is a mere two feet tall. Two feet is rather tall to the scrawny ten year old.
"Danny, don't hurt yourself!", the young girl has always been one to worry –a trait she inherited from her father. She reaches a hand up to nervously gnaw on her fingernails, although she can't help but feel excited for the actions to follow. Daniel ignores her concern, and swiftly slips down to slide, somehow managing to fit in a front flip before he lands in the water. Eventually, he resurfaces, sending a cocky smirk towards his sister. Her expression morphs into one of determination. She wants to win this thing, or else she'll have to deal with Daniel's incessant bragging.
"Pssht, I can totally do that!", she says, her skinny little legs guiding her to the slide. She tries to ignore the heavy feeling in her stomach, knowing that she'll be fine, won't she?
Hesitantly, she pushes her body down the slide, trying to accomplish a flip as she does so, but rather lamely falling into a pool instead. Daniel releases a bark of laughter, beginning to do a victory lap around the pool. He comes to a halt, however, when he has completed a full lap of the pool and Amelia is still laying on the concrete floor, embedded in water.
